Need cam help

Ive got talldeck 540s, with big brodix heads, 10.2.1 comp, 1150 dominators, cam# not sure, but on the dyno they pulled 650tq, 620hp i think the cam is the problem the builder says the heads are the prob. The heads are 365 i think is the number. I think the builder used some 500efi cams, im just wondering why these didnt make 700hp as to thats what i wanted and stated to the builder. So if any of you guys have some 540s single carb no blower please give me your cam specs so i can compare to see where i went wrong.

I'm pretty sure the 500 EFI cams are very close to the hp 500 cams. If thats true then the cams are your problem as they would be fairly small for your build. The 525 cams are quite a bit more powerful and would get you better results. The best thing to do would be to call Madera and have him spec out two cams. If your going to replace the cams with new roller cams the price will be the same if not a tad less and your engine would be optimized for how its built.

For off the shelf cams, the crane 651 or 741 cam would do well. Or contact rmbuilder on here.

I have a 540 with 9.7 to 1 comp. 1050 domimator. I would contact Bob Madera (Rm Builder 585-654-8583). He made my cam and it works great.

yes i think my cams are to small, guess i will get the numbers and go from there, when we started this the builder said 700hp was not a problem, now there done and 620hp is not what i wanted, but he says my heads are old style. there big brodix alum bb2 have been ported and other stuff. im thinking the cams are to small

fbc25el what hp did yours make.

fbc25el 08-25-2012 11:56 AM

I did not dyno the motor. But I had a crane cam in it and it would only pull to about 5400 rpm. I put one of Bob's cams in it and it would pull strong to about 5900 rpm. That was the only change I made.

Them little baby cams are holding you back, I made 657 hp with my 8.4-1 540s (less than ideal compression) with blower belt off with a cam from Bob Madera, with 10-1 compression and a cam ground optimized for running N/A I would expect a easy 700 hp, Smitty

Sounds like your cams are BIGGER than stock hp 500 efi cams:
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...cam-specs.html
For the record EFI
292*/298* @ .004"
230*/236* @ .050"
.352"/.359" lobe
.598"/.610" valve
114* LSA
109* ICL
119* ECL
But if your duraration is anywhere close to only 230/236 at .050 it is killing your hp potential. I also gotta imagine your heads fklow well past .700 lift so your leaving alot on the table with .612/.631 lift. If your looking for 700+ hp its going to take a cam that is a little bigger, your boat wont idle as smooth, low or strong but thats the price you pay. Bob Madera marine kinetics 585-654-8583 is a great cam guy as far as specing a cam that does what you want, Smitty

As others have recommend.......call Bob Madara @ Marine Kenetics and have him spec your cam for you. You will NOT be disappointed! He is awesome to work with and is extreamly knowledgeable! I can also speak from personal experience as I have one ofhis cam's in my motor.....and couldn't be happier!
