7.4 Would not start????
Last weekend we were floating on rafts all afternoon and I had my Baja 212 Islander anchored in the middle of the lake. Boat traffic was horrible and the old girl was hammered from side to side, close to taking water over the sides a few times. This pounding went on for several hours but not much we could do except perhaps leave the lake.
I had about a half a tank of fuel at the time. It came time to leave and the engine would not start. Normally I touch the key and it goes. I cranked and cranked as after 5 or 8 times it began to run a little longer and then a little longer etc. Then it ran and seems to be OK as I shut down and started up 5 or 6 more times before leaving the lake. It was almost like I had run out of fuel and the line, and filter and fuel pump had to fill with fuel again. This is a 2000 boat and I have NEVER had one single problem in starting whatsoever. The engine/boat runs perfect. But I have never had it get pounded in waves for hours like it did either. Did the waves have anything to do with it or am I just getting an early indication of a problem with a fuel pump? The boat has 40 total hours on it. Thanks for any input. |
Is is a carbed motor??
Sounds like it got flooded.....bouncing around like that will bounce your floats and throw fuel in the motor. Did you notice any black smoke on the restart. |
Sounds like it flooded to me also.

I think all the 7.4L (310HP) motors were MPI in 2000. Those should not flood.

No Carb.
It is MPI and no carb.
Any ideas????  |
I have the 1999 version of the same engine..I don't think there is a difference. Mine did the same thing one time last year. Started after several cranks and sputtered for about 10~20 seconds...
Cut it off, started it again, ran this piss out of it and it has not done it since! Scratched my head for a while but never figured out what caused it...Hell...I am TRYING to blow the damn thing up!!! :D |
