I am having a hard time with starters on my 572. I'm sure the shop that rebuilds it for me uses Chinese drives cause it did not last 8 bumps of the key. I just put in a new gm starter for the 8.1 motor if you do a search I started a thread on this 2 weeks ago

These are one of the best starters we have found anywhere for high performance marine applications. Here's an option http://www.hardin-marine.com/p-13381...r-sbc-bbc.aspx

zeke im having the same problems seems like the ones are cheap built and don't last, have you had luck with that one a buddy of mine said do the same thing but ive had my big ass (actually belly) in there till im sick of crawling in there. ive put 1.5hrs on a 42fountain in two seasons kinda getting pissed. paying payments and insurance to have it sit in the garage.

The stock merc gear reduction starters have plastic gears in them so any kind of kick back will strip the gears. Not sure if there are any replacements for them that are any better. Maybe try Tilton or CPs starter (above post) price seems fair if they work. Randy

MSD makes a good gear reduction starter that is offset to clear most oil pans. I have run it all year so far. I'm running a 598 ci at 10.1
