Inverted oil filter trick?
when draining my oil what is the trick to drain the inverted oil filter before removing to prevent it leaking all over ?
|
Punch a small hole in it at the top while you are draing your oil.

Just unscrew it enough to allow a small air gap between the oring and filter pad. The filter will drain w/o a drop spilled. Sounds crazy, but it works!

both ways work,if you punch a hole dont forget to cover the hole before u turn the filter upside down or u will make a mess.dont ask me how i know this :lolhit:

I have a thick screwdriver the that is about 1/2 inch shorter than my filter. I have it sharpened to a point. With the oil warm, I open the drains on the tubes, and punch the whole through the TDC of the filter, all the way through. I come back the next day, and my oil filters and housing valleys are bone dry. I also pop off the oil fill cap and pull the dipstick open a bit too.

Nice trick :) Gonna need to remember that one.

Crazy question... are you not letting the contaminate flow back in the block?
|
I drilled and tapped for a brass plug on the housing, fill up an empty beer can...no mess, and quick.

Carrera that sounds like a great idea, I would love to see a pic of your set up as well as info on the size thread/brass plug used.
Thanks, JB |
@ Carerra1, yes please post a pic of your modification to the filter housing.

US1 has hit it right on the head, crazy as this seems, too simple therefore can't wok. It does! I've been the punch the hole deal etc with marginal results. Talked with one of the good guys at the marina this past friday, changing oil and filter for the end of year. He said the best, less mess way was to do just what US1 just said. Crack it loose, not so much that it leaks out, let it sit for a few minutes. Not a drop leaked out, no oil mess. Sounds way to simple, but it works! Another little tip he gave me was to take the oil pump hose and suck the oil out of the two holes in the filter base, it sucks the oil out of the oil cooler, do both holes. Told me he started doing this because of customer questions/complaints that their oil had not been changed because it looked dark, from the residual old oil, said it helped a lot on his work order complaints. This guy is the only one I have ever trusted my chit to, he's an old school, common sense guy. If there is a better way to do it, he will figure it out. |
in a pinch for time you can simply remove the bolts holding the mount to the engine, flip it over (right side up). no mess / no waiting / no possibility of unscrewing too much and leaking all over and no pushing oil from the filter back into your motor (not that it really matters)... and vua-la... you're done.
