Full HYD steering hard to turn right only
Got this used MM system off OSO, thanks!
I replaced all HYD lines with new. This is a full HYD 2 ram system. I rebuilt helm due to it being in a fire. Installed myself pretty strait forward. Oh, single eng 24/7 boat. Here's my issue: It's Always been pretty hard to steer especially to the right. Using ATF. Took out filter and no change. Eng rpm doesn't affect it. Hard at all rpms. I can let go of wheel at speed and it holds straight. I don't know where to troubleshoot. Any help is appreciated!! |
Im no guru but it sounds like you might have air built up in the line... You should have some pop off value somewhere... open it and turn you wheel all the way to the right since that is the direction that is giving you the most trouble... That should bled all the air out of the line.. close the value and you should be good to go...

Is this the normal one powered by GM p/s pump ? I would think have to be a issue with the helm, ram, or possibly a hose collapsing pump would not know diff left to right..

If full hydraulic, first thought would be the helm. Without the engine running, if you turn the wheel slightly in each direction you should be able to feel the "springs" between the tube shafts in the helm. When you overcome the springs, porting in the helm changes.

Ok
Falcon,
Good info. I'll have to go test that theory. I think you have put me on the right track. I'll post results after test. FT |
Adjust the spool valve on the helm. With engine running, turn the wheel slowly back and forth while adjusting until it feels the same both directions. OR with motor at 2000 rpm, adjust one direction until it starts "creeping" to one side, then note how far you have to turn the adjuster to get it to creep the other direction, and then split the difference.
