Can i use a flat tappet cam in a roller block

can i use a flat tappet hyd cam from a gen 5 in a gen 6 roller block? If so,which timing chain and cover?

Young Performance 12-15-2012 03:11 PM

Why would you want to do that?

checkeredpast 12-15-2012 03:30 PM

100% agree... Eddie swapped my tappet cam out instantly...not enough zinc in the oils anymore. Go to hydro roller.... More power as well...

Not sure on the actual answer to your question, but I would def even use a stock or close to stock roller vs whatever I had in a flat tappet. If at all possible use a roller with even the factory lifter setup.

checkeredpast 12-16-2012 05:55 AM

i agree that the roller setup is better, just trying to do the block swap.

Checkeredpast is doing a build for a guy who is retired and on a limited budget. We will all agree that a hydraulic roller would be better, but was just wondering if that is one way we could save some money for the guy being that we are having trouble coming across a Gen V block.

ezstriper 12-16-2012 08:31 AM

well yes you can, but would not...merc did it on the gen VI 525sc's, just rebuilt 2 early this year, but switched to new rollers from marine kinetics...Bob did a great job making them close to stock...

tunertech 12-16-2012 08:16 PM

the cost to go backward would make adding a stock roller cheaper

I agree, get a take out stock roller set-up, you can get them for next to nothing.

Which timing set do you use,gen 5 or gen6?

mike tkach 12-19-2012 06:41 AM

gen6

ezstriper 12-19-2012 07:07 AM

yes, have to use gen VI because of timing cover, but were using a roller...

checkeredpast 12-19-2012 07:22 AM

Thanks for your help guys!

HaxbySpeed 12-19-2012 05:41 PM

No, you'll have to use a IV or V timing set. The VI is for a step nose cam and will not work on your flat tappet. Some doubles fit inside the stock timing cover but if you have any clearance issues you can just use a good quality single, or get an aftermarket cover.

I have found a roller and springs so I think we're going that route. Anyone have a set of push rods for a Gen 6?

protechcoat 12-21-2012 11:34 PM

you said you found a gen6 block it is mage for roller cams just like the gen 5 . all your old parts should fit .ive built lots of them.

Gen 5 had flat tappets. He needs pushrods for his new roller set up.

ezstriper 12-22-2012 07:36 AM

you are going to need to assemble engine and then check to see what length push rod you are going to need...

protechcoat 12-24-2012 12:05 AM

a good length to start with is 8.250 int and 9.250 exh for a short deck . i use the gm part #12371053 timing set ( single roller ) it commes with the thrust plate and bolts.hope this helps.
