525 hawk (BoBo build) Take 2
OK so my buddy's intake manifolds are crap.
Welding would work but it does not seem worth saving them. Plan 2 is a 496 rotating assembly normally aspirated rebuild. The question is how cheap can you go and expect it to live a decent life (200 hours)? Is a Scat low end cast assembly a risk? Is clearance for the longer stroke a big issue? How good is quality control on journal sizes etc on the low dollar stuff? Any and all thoughts appreciated (even moderate sarcasm). Thanks Steve |
I ran a 9000 series scat n/a maybe 475hp for a good number or years no problem. I added blowers and got another 2yrs before breaking one. I'd be fine using one n/a up to 450hp or so. The machine work was poor I thought back when I bought those cast scats but more recent forged scats I've used have measure out much better. If I was stroking it I think I'd go forged. Its not worth the risk. My block was destroyed when the crank broke, it was an ugly mess in there.

Callies has proven to be the best value in my experience regarding the entry level priced rotating assemblies. The tolerances are as close as any in the industry and the option to bundle piston, ring, bearing, and balancing options are extensive. Piston alloy and ring pack choices are key to your selection. Thanks Bob ! Trying to get there . These are the same engines we spoke about a year ago! Good guy known him since I was 6, them being down bothers me more than him!
