if the pistons are out i use a soft wire wheel on the bench grinder,,works great..if still in the block get a can of mercruiser power tune and spray the top of the pistons and leave it sit over night,,you will be able to wipe it off by morning..

I have used oven cleaner, never had issues.. came right off!

I tried the partswasher chem, soaking in gas,soaking marvel mystery oil,none worked verygood,scotchbrite pad in the partswasher,

the scotch brite wheel like ya use when deburing works,


becareful with easyoff oven cleaner on the sides,it will etch it

On the superstock web forums they say dont use scotch brite pads, it leaves fibers that want wash off and will go thru the motor,bearings etc. not worth taking a chance
