Merc 600's info?
does anyone have any tech info on the merc 600's? what block, blower, carbs, boost, etc.? what kind of hp/torque at what rpm ranges are they producing? what kind of experiences have you had with these motors? how many normal hours can be expected out of them before a rebuild?
any info or links to info would be appreciated. thanks in advance.... chad |
I think they were 540ci with B&M 420s.
|
thanks for the info, brad.
anyone else????? chad |
They are 502's with the megablower, dual holley 750's and cmi exhaust.

did they all have dual 750's on them? the picture i have of the motors sitting in a cig do not have dual 750's on them....
|
Those are also not B&M 420 megablowers either.

JBK 600'S
the 600's were 502 ci motors with 7.5 compression used the B&M 420 megablower they were rated at 550 at the prop, rpm range was 4800-5200. they would make more power if you ran them with more rpm and boost which i believe in stock trim they ran approx. 5lbs of boost. with a minumum octane of 91 and 93 the perfered choice. they only came as a bobtail and were rough on bravo's. |
later- thanks for the info! with only 5lbs of boost, i would think the reliability/longevity would be decent. either way, with 230 original hours, i'm still looking at a rebuild in the very near future.
are you going to be at the lake this weekend? i'll probably be down, but it will be a working weekend for me. i'm finishing moving into the new place and then probably cleaning on the boat, changing oil, etc. thanks again, chad |
JBK
i take it your looking at a 38 cig with 600's I would think that at 230hrs you wouldnt get to many moer hrs before rebuilds. although i have read were some of the blower motors go into the 400hrs im sure there pretty tired. i will be down this weekend having a relaxing weekend. had all my guy's and their wifes that work for me down for a bbq last weekend about 26 people and i was wopped entertaining and all (hard work) making sure everyone is having a good time. ill be piddling this weekend wax the boat etc. hopefuly your moved into your new place and have found a place for everything by now are found everything sometimes thats a chore unpacking and all. ill look for you on the water and if your up my way stop by and ill by you a drink. |
yep, i've always had a thing for that boat. i used to see it flying up and down the lake when Brian Foster owned it. i'm actually looking for a late model T/S, but old memories die hard...LOL.
i'll look you up if i'm up at your end of the lake. thanks again! chad |
JBK,
Are they trying to pass those off as stock Merc 600's? Get a serial number off the block and find out what those motors are. The only 600's I have seen were twin carbed. Merc used the 502 as the base for those motors. I'm not an expert on engines but guys I have talked to don't like running single carbs on top of blowers because the outside cylinders run lean. Dan |
those blower looks like 250s with single carbs. i have heard its an ok setup with dom 1050 or bigger but dual carbs is much better. 420 megablowers are big ole things.

candyman, puder, david - thanks for the 411. i have not questioned the owner about the discrepancies yet. i thought it was kind of funny though, all the research that i had done before i posted here, stated 502cu inch, dual 700's, w/ a 420 mega. puder, i think the blowers look like 250's as well.
thanks again. i'll keep you updated as to what i find. chad |
Are those possibly 525SC's in the picture? If so, they are 454 blocks, not 502's.
|
525s would have weiand blowers. Those are B&M 250s, but good point. Need to see what is stamped on the block.
