Dual cable steering on 98 25' Outlaw
Hi all, I have a dual cable power steering setup on my Outlaw with an add on dual latham steering and after rebuilding the gimbal swivel pins etc. I turned the steering wheel lock to lock without the tiller being hooked up to the steering gear to check for any binding and general condition of the steering cables. I noticed the next morning that the guide tubes that the cables run thru at the control valve started to drip oil from the ends where the cable exits and joins the piece that connects to the tiller arm. I dont recall what its proper name is. lol. My question is.. Do the guide tubes have O-rings in them where they pass thru close to the control valve. On the dual cable systems the cables and control valve seem to be separate from each other except for a bolt that connects the cable block to the control valve. Is oil from the control valve able to travel to the cables? for lubrication maybe? The steering was working fine before i took the motor out. Engine is still out until I get this fixed. Mercury service manuel says the steering gear is Non-servicable. I am determined to fix this meself until I can afford to go full hydraulic. Anyone have any knowlege of these dual cable systems?
Thanks James |
