496HO 2003/ forged internals???
Help ...I'm Installing A Whipple On My 2003 496 HO, and Need To Know If It Has Forged Internal Parts Or Not?? From Research, I've Read That Some Does And Some Don't, Mine Is The 425 hp ...Please HelP!!
Thanks |
Not sure if it does or doesn;'t,thats been debated many times. I have the same engine as you and I have been running a Procharger for almost 400 hours with no issues.

Thanks,How Much Boost Are You RuNning?

3.5,but I know a lot 5psi motors are out there with no problems either.

First, none had forged pistons - ever.
Very few had forged cranks and they were before 2002. So, its not not likely, some say before 2002 but I bought 2(2002) for parts and neither had forged cranks. That being said, the cast crank will easily run up to 750+ HP (both Whipple and Raylar will vouch for that) your major problem here is cast pistons 99% of the failures you hear about are due to a piston imploding. Matter of fact I imploded one. Personally, I think problem 1 is the pistons and problem 2 is valve train - aka valve springs. The springs suck. If you are pulling the motor to install the whipple you can put forged pistons in it for CHEAP/ $400 I think Diamond had a set for like $375 (cant remember) and then you have a pretty robust engine. Just my observation blowing up 2 of them and building 1 496 HO and 2 496 HO 600's |
Piston failure is a ring gap issue, the gap is to close for marine use.if you make it a couple hundred hours you should be safe, that's according to raylar

That doesnt make sense. After I did the big heads and cam I shot a connecting rod thru the cylinder wall at 400 hours. Stock pistons were barely designed for 425 HP let alone 625 HP (or more) This is a 496 piston... um er I mean parts of the piston. The remnants in the oil pan anyway... |
Coincedentally, forged 496/8.1 rotating assemblies are in the OSO classifieds.

He said the ring hits itself and breaks the piston, the rod always goes through the block on the 496.

Guys, Thanks For Your Help! Maybe I Can Make A Decision This Week When I Order The Parts.
Thanks Again! |
