Oil Pump shaft length?

I'm having an issue with my distributor shaft not sitting flush with my intake. I think I've tracked the issue to the intermediate oil pump shaft. Does anyone know what the length should be for a 454? I'm coming up with right around 6.68 inches. I believe it's supposed to be 6.50".

I'm seeing 6.72 for the standard length.

Interesting- Anyone know how far the input shaft is supposed to stick out of the pump? Mine is 1.384"

They are all between 1.375-1.400 depending on the casting. The shaft for a standard BBC Std. cam ht. is 6.500 OAL.

Ok thanks, then the issue is with my pump shaft. That's what I figured.

Tried to drop the distributor in without the pump and it still won't sit flush...

Is this the dist that came out of the same intake? Use some grease on the dist gear and drop it in as far as it will go then take it out and observe the pattern on the gear. Should give you some indication of wether or not the gear is fully meshing with the cam. Is there taller dist for tall deck engines? I've seen dist with adjustable collers, must be a reason for being able to adjust them? Sorry I'm not more help.

need more info. yes there is a different dist for tall decks as the intake is up higher, that is the reason for the slip collar dist is to adjust for tall or short deck or heavily decked blocks, etc. when you say it does not go is it up by .030 or 1/4 inch? as asked did this dist come out of this engine? is it going down and rotating into the cam gear?

Take a look at my new post- "Distributor not dropping in", I have a picture of the nose of the cam, and to me it appears the button ground itself into the nose. I used a Cloyes timing set and the button is froze up and misshapen. As to your question about the distributor being correct. It is for a standard deck. I even pulled one out of a 330 that I have an I get the same results, to high by approximately 1/8 inch.

Is it a after market block? I had to chamfer the tip of my distributor gear to get it to drop in. I had the block machine the next time I was in it.
