Starter Help please -- ASAP
Hey all
Need some questions answered for me if anyone can help! I need 2 starters for this tub to run Does anyone know a cross reference number to a car or model/year that these starters cross reference? As I know it, there is no such thing as a marine starter just that this particular starter is all sealed and no air gaps for sparks ect to get through. I see that some small blocks and big blocks basically use the same one. I need the cross reference for it to a car make and model OE number is 10496873 AC Delco # is 323-367 Most pep boys rebuilds are Prostart, even a cross reference number to that or what not would be helpful Thanks guys Looks like she will run after these starters get replaced Jason |
Jason,
I'm glad to see that you have not given up! I spent all winter on my project, just to have a piston melt after about 4 times out in the boat. I felt like crying!!! But yanked it out, sent it to the engine builder, back in the boat and boating for a couple of weeks now! You still have time to finish and enjoy a little boating. as far as the starters go, I would stick with the marine starters. Call Gary at Ward Marine in Winthrop, Ma, (617)846-1421 best prices, best service, if they are in stock they will go out today! You have had too many hold ups now, it would be very unwise to not put a "spark" safe marine starter under your enclosed engine hatch!! |
You need to rebuild the starters you have. I would not put a auto starter on the boat especialy if you cant change back to a marine starter at a later date. Auto starters are not ignition protected. Fuel fumes are heavier that air and will collect in the bilge near the starters. Its a bomb waiting to happen. You dont even need a fuel leak for it to happen. Also if it does burn for any reason and your insurance co. finds a non marine electrical componet on the boat they will not pay the claim. You should be able to get them rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new marine starter. I know of one guy who bought an auto starter and took it apart and replaced the end caps with the ones off of his marine starter. I dont know if there is any other mods to make a marine starter out of a auto one.
Dont start cutting corners now! Ron |
What about taking them to a rebuild shop?
Gotta be, I know it will be, cheaper than buying new ones. |
Rebuild shop wanted 150.00 each to rebuild them
Oh for the love of god man!!! you nuts? they are starters, not made out of 18 K gold buddy Thing is there is not technically a "marine" starter this starter I believe was out of a 1990 Caprice with a police package. all totally sealed up , no gaps or vents of any kind. Im still working on that but it is a staggered starter type BBC should all be 168 tooth, and I need it totally sealed Not sure but I think it is the 8 inch model , seemed small to me, not like one of the big huge honkin mo fo's going to Napa after work, they said they have them there 3 of them, 50 a piece the origional quote to rebuild was 40 from one guy but he is not around until next week. so OTHER guy in next town wants 150 each to rebuild Hell bite me dough boy hows that, you can sit on your own damn Bendix for all I care Jason |
There is a diff between auto and marine starters. Marine units have an extra plate between the steel housing and the nose piece. The rear plate has no vents. The relay (solenoid) is sealed.

I agree with the rest of the guys. DON'T use an automotive starter.

I saw a price of $160 for new, not rebuilt.

I just have my starters and alternators rebuilt by a local shop - the price is good and they work as if they were new.

found this and thought it was just about right.

If they are bottom mount starters? You are better off getting them from Mercruiser. They have a 1 yerar warranty. If you have a twin engine application? The port motor can be a real bear. For that particular reason, I will never use a rebuilt bottom mount starter again.

Jay. Give me a call tomarrow!!!! I have I think, a cheap alternative for a Marine Starter.

I just had mine gone through for $60.
|
Jayl13,
I have used these guys before and had good luck. http://www.amarket.com/starinbo.htm Don't use an automotive starter. It's a shame people decide to triple the price when they here it's for a boat. Good luck, Dan |
You can just try and hand them the starters and NOT tell them they are Marine. THe nose piece on a Marine starter is different to arrest any sparks.

STARTERS
Do you have Dennis Moore's book on BBC Marine engines? If you do read the section on starters, if not BUY THE BOOK. This will help answer alot of your questions. Hey, you can still get a $29 starter from Pep Boys with a LIFETIME warranty. Put one in my old truck and after replacing it a few times (4 times in 2 years) I bought an AC/Delco Rebuild. Now have 650,000 miles on the truck and over 400k on the AC starter. Starters are not easy to replace on a boat so buy the best you can, and get a MARINE UNIT. Or rebuild yours.

Mine are being rebuilt, Should have them back today or tomorrow

Did the Tech have any idea what happened to the starters? I hope all goes well. My project has been going on for 18months and I will be pulling the engine off the dyno this week. Even then it seems like the I have a ton of work to do.
Good luck! Todd |
Yeah the one was basically burnt inside from crankin and the other one welded itself together and the solenoid was just gone.
So tomorrow I should have them done and back to me to get reinstalled. Im still shocked this dude got both starters out while still in the boat. A 280 baja is by far the biggest nightmare engine compartment to work on. If you have never seen a 280 compartment, go look at one. Your first words will be "No F**ING WAY am I doing S**T to this friggin thing!!!" Jason |
Jay, your attitude and persistence is an inspiration to us all. I have followed your story with all of its seemingly never-ending problems. It's kinda like one of those old horror movies...the victim can never quite get away from the bad guy. One last scream and then they are toast.
I hope you have just escaped, my friend, and make it to the sequel. Now get this thing finished so we can see some pics of her running and you and the wife with BIG smiles across your faces. Rick |
Jason: Is the Tech coming back to fire them for you ?
I hope so! Hang in there dude......... |
