Valvoline Vr1 racing oil
#13
I have been reading for years that the zinc is critical for flat tapped cam engines, but I am wondering if it is as big of a deal if you are running a fully rollerized valvetrain. In this case, is a good synthetic oil better, or do I still have to concern myself with zinc levels. I have had discussions with a couple of respected engine builders who stated that the general trend with performance engines is towards tighter clearances and lower viscosity. However, with the tighter clearances it is also critical to keep oil temps above 190*-200* when running it hard.
I have also been told to use organic oil for breakin, and I seem to hear differing opinions on how long to go before switching to synthetic oil.

Zinc, (ZDDP), is more than just a anti-wear additive. It is also an anti-oxidant. It helps prolong your drain intervals by preventing your oil from thickening due to high heat or from long drain intervals. The later is probably more of an issue in a auto engine.
