Question on Bravo lower
I took the bearing carrier out to replace the prop seals. After reading up on it, I realized I need to set the preload. When I took out the o-ring and steel ring that that carrier sits against I didn't see a crush ring in there? This is an '89, do the older ones not have this?
Unfortunetly I didn't mark the retaining ring so when putting it back together I think the manual said around 150 ft-lbs. Since there is no crush ring, it doesn't appear that there would be a need to set the pre-load (it would just be what it is when the carrier tightens against the steel ring). Any help is appreciated. |
Call George at All American Drive Services out of Michigan. He's one of the most helpful gentlemen I've ever dealt with.

Thanks for the reponses, I took a look at the diagram and it looks like I have the older style with the thicker washer and shims vs. the newer thinner washer with the load (crush) ring.

You are correct, in 89 they used shims to set the preload. The crush ring replaced the shims in later years. Imco still uses the shims. Either way works well. You can also replace the shims with a crush ring, but using a .105" shim between the crush ring and oring.
Hope that helps. Dick |
You should be able to simply retorque the spanner nut to specs and your preload will correct. That is if you saved all the shims. Shimmed setups are nice once the setup is correct.

Got it, thanks for the help.
