Solid roller lash check

I have a pair of chief 598's with 10-71's and solid roller sutup's. How often are you guys checking lash? Running a comp cam with 260/268 @ .50 and calls for .20 lash. Every weekend, 10 hours, 20 hours...........?

rob vanharten 06-10-2013 08:28 PM

Rev limiter set 6k on these. Is it worth swapping over to hydraulics?

GPM 06-10-2013 08:54 PM

What rockers are you running ?

Rookie 06-10-2013 09:11 PM

I check mine once at the start of the summer. I have never had to adjust any lash once they have been set. About 50hrs is the longest I have gone with out removing my heads though. What lift you running? I assume you got that Cat.

rob vanharten 06-11-2013 08:08 AM

Yes I did get the cat. Not sure on what rockers yet, but will be checking here soon. I have only had the boat a week, so still learning some things about it. Was looking at the cam card last night, and I am at work now but I think lift was .712/.690 or something close to it.......

Sounds Like a lot of cam for hydraulic lifters.

BenPerfected 06-11-2013 10:08 AM

I would first check the lash at about 20 hrs and then again every 10-15 hours. When the lash exceeds .002 over your base setting, you will then better know your approximate adjustment interval. Our experience is the lash adjustment cycle depends on the entire valve train combination.

Solid roller with Jezel shaft rockes on a NA 557. I check the lash at the beginning of each season, never much of a change at all. That said, I think if the lash changed by more than a few thou. there might be something bad going on? Sorry, guess that's as much of a question as it is a reply...........

rob vanharten 06-11-2013 02:31 PM

Okay popped a couple breathers off on my lunch break, looks like a gold crane roller rocker, with a rocker girdle on top. Couldn't see through the small hole well enough to tell if they were shaft mounted or not?

GPM 06-11-2013 03:11 PM

You wouldn't run a stud girdle with shaft rockers,

Yes after some research I see that as well:) Thanks for the information. It looks like a rocker girdle adds some more headache to a valve lash...... Starting to think about a Hydraulic setup, after diving into some solid roller searches it seams like a very labor intensive and expensive choice to run the solids. Changing lifters every 30-50 hours!!!:(

i did mine at the beginning of the season,,and even then i never had to adjust mine,,roller lifters are easy on solid cams,,it thewy were flat tappet then their would be a little ware..Btw 50 hrs only if your at high rpm for that long,,i have gone 120ish then just went and refreshed everything....you can make it easier if you got rid of the stud girtles and those style rockers and went to a T&D or jessel style shaft rocker..

Okay so the cam card reads .714 gross intake lift .690 gross exhaust lift valve lash .20 lash adjustment both sides, intake 260 @ .50 duration and exhaust @ 268 .50 duration. Could a similar setup be done with a hydraulic over the solids. Again motor is limited to 6k.

I've ran the same Isky solid lifters since '06. I just sent them back to Isky last month to get them rebuilt $20/ea or $320/set.
And I'm putting those solid lifters on my new hydraulic roller cams this season. Don't be scared of them, check the lash this summer and enjoy the boat.:)

rob vanharten 06-12-2013 08:11 AM

Thanks Jason, I think I will take that advice:)

20 hours is a good interval & should just be a quick check to verify & If your re-setting Lash better dig a lil deeper cause you have other problems going on
