496 w/Whipple rebuild specs & clearances
I am helping a buddy rebuild his 496 with a whipple.
We pulled the motor down yesterday and it spun a rod bearing on #6. Not really sure why it spun because it didn't have many hours. It has eagle rods and diamond flat top pistons and standard crank. #6 piston slapped the head, so the piston will need replaced and hopefully the head isn't cracked. The piston is above the deck and it has Cometic head gaskets, I didn't measure the deck clearance but will upon assembly. The cylinder will probably clean up with a hone job because you can't feel any ridges, but it looks like a few metal scratchs going up and down. It is all going to the machine shop today, but I need to tell them what clearances we want for the crank journals. Are the specs similar to the 502? I have rebuilt many BBC's but not a 496 w/blower. Looking for information on the following as the crank will need to be turned to 10 under; Oil pump Melling 10778c Bearings, clevitte77? Rod clearance! .0025? Main clearance! .0025? Crank end gap? Piston deck height clearance .040? Piston pin clearance .001 or .0015? can probably get this from Diamond Ring end gap top? Ring end gap bottom? Thanks for the help and advise! |
Everyone must be busy! We got the original specs from the builder the way it was, so it's pretty much the same as the 502.
Cylinder - .006 Mains - .003 Rods - .00275 rod side clearance .015 crank end play - .008 - .012 |
