Should I be able to

make a wide open throttle run and kill the engine in gear or will the engine try to keep running? I would like to check plugs this way.

CigDaze 07-30-2002 10:23 AM

Let me get this straight...You want to open her up to WOT and then shut it off in gear?....While running??
That doesn't sound safe.

But to answer your question, the engine will not make power, as it will not be getting spark(efi will not feed fuel either) -- but it will continue to turn from prop torque.

I've heard of people blowing drives by doing that. Of course, that wasn't a naturally aspirated application either. Plus you'll have to FORCE the drive back into neutral to start it. Too many times and you'll proably bend the shift forks.

KCHOTBOAT 07-30-2002 11:26 AM

I have done it several times to check plugs. Not sure how good it is on the drive. My HTM starts in gear so I don't have to worry about getting the drive back in neutral.

I did it all the time on my '98 25' Outlaw without a problem, but the other day I tried it on my N/A 502 HTM and the engine tried to run backwards like your car will do when timing is too high. I checked timing and it was fine, I actually had it set at 32 advanced.

Lsat time I did that with wet exhaust it hydrolocked the engine.

Now that I think of it, I believe the guy tried to restart the engines. I'm thinking he somehow shut ignition off and turned it back on and blew the drive. Must have something to do with the loading of the gears.

Sounds like I've been lucky. Thanks for the replies.

SR-24......The procedure you speak of is described by Procharger as the way to check plugs......but Dean Nickerson (THE carb guy), says WOT, pull back to idle, then shut it off. He says this will not affect the plug readings because it is not running long enough after the WOT blast. It also prevents the reversion problem, the gear problem, etc, etc.......

We are talking about another gathering in September on Eufaula..... Are you Game????? We will email the details later!!

BLOWN FORMULA

;) ;) ;)
I haven't always done it this way for years with no problems.
WOT
Throttle back
Kill motor :D Turn off motor
Slip in netural

SR's don't have a problem with water back flushing up the tailpipes like some boats do. Be careful of that
