If the splines strip out you will see nothing, but if you can see the input shaft from the drive behind the bell housing, it should spin with the motor. If it doesn't the coupler is bad. I had one go bad trying to get on plane and It will create a boom also, however it is probably the drive.

that happened to mine, all it was was the shift dog in the upper (snapped in half)....1 alan screw and R&R of the drive...it is located behind the back cap (where the HYD. steering mounts)
