Broke starter and ring gear

Do i have to pull the drive again or can i slide it far enough forward and get it off the splines to lift the engine high enough to change the ring gear. Ive put 1.45hours on it in two seasons kind of getting tired of working on it.

yes you need to pull the drive to remove the engine to remove the flywheel to replace the ring gear..

try this... tap your heals three times and wish for the ring gear to fix itself

johnny,id be very concerned why the ring gear and the starter broke.

johnnyboatman 07-09-2013 09:10 PM

cheap ass china gear reduction starter, should had known happened before went to a msd starter never happened again,

johnnyboatman 07-09-2013 09:13 PM

andy I tried that, its my own fault, should had put better brand instead of that cheap ass crap, live and learn tho, now to pulling the engine phuckin pos.

johnnyboatman 07-09-2013 09:14 PM

i knew i had to pull it was just wondering if i could slide it out of the coupler and raise it instead of pulling the engine.

the drive needs to come ,,once its off and if you have room in the boat you can just spin the engine to ermove the bellhousing and flywheel,,the ring can be bought at napa and you can just knock the old one off with a hammer and chisel and warn the new one up with a map torch and drop it on..once it cools install flywheel..

Once you get the flywheel and starter replaced you should remove the spark plugs and see if water blows out of them when cranking the starter. Or else you may end up replacing an expensive US made starter next.... or worse.

johnnyboatman 07-10-2013 01:46 PM

The prob was the accelerator pump rod fell off onto the intake, when ti started it died i cranked it over and over , thinking it flooded , push the throttle all the way forward to clear it out(which it wasnt flooded) to have it spit back and break the starter and chip some teeth. No water in the cylinder , just a mess up by me .

blue thunder 07-10-2013 06:40 PM

Ouch! But good you have problem definition. Good luck with it.

ezstriper 07-11-2013 06:39 AM

don't think that was the cause....

johnny, this is good advice and will not take a lot of time to do,i highly reccomend doing it for peace of mind if nothing else.

johnnyboatman 07-11-2013 09:30 PM

I pulled the plug and headers no water, I know what happened when I shimmed the starter I stripped it thinking it would be ok, well not I should had waited till the next morning and got the correct one, if so I wouldn't be working on it today. I will post a pic of the starter and it will tell the story.

unless you can get at the transom side of the flywheel i would not use that kind of starter,,it will break the flywheel everytime if the teeth are not shimmed correctly....use a mini high torque starter with a nose cone..

ezstriper 07-12-2013 08:55 AM

you need a decent gear reduction starter with enough torque to handle the engine, powermaster, MSD, etc...

johnnyboatman 07-15-2013 10:24 AM

I just pulled the engine and changed the ring gear, put 2 new gm gear reduction starters on, im wore out , will finish it in the next few days the engine is back in the hole all bolted down got some wires and the headers to put back on.
