adjusting flat tappet valves

Still looking for the most accurate way. Has anyone tried this sequence to adjust the valves.

Intake Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!
• with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
• with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
• with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
• with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
• with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
• with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
• with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
• with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve

Exhaust Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

You will notice that this is the same procedure and sequence as the intake valves listed above. Only now you are adjusting ONLY the exhaust valves the same way.
• with #1 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Exhaust Valve
• with #8 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Exhaust Valve
• with #4 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Exhaust Valve
• with #3 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Exhaust Valve
• with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
• with #5 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Exhaust Valve
• with #7 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Exhaust Valve
• with #2 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Exhaust Valve

EOIC - can't screw it up. exhaust starts to open, adjust intake. Intake starts to close, adjust exhaust.

Wow that sounds way to complicated!

My intake manifold in on.. Its this harder to do or is this way easier

TDC #1, pointer at "0". You can now adjust the following valves:

INTAKE on cylinders 1,2,5,7
EXHAUST on cylinders 1,3,4,8

Loosen the adjusting nut until lash is felt by rotating the pushrod. Then
tighten the adjusting nut while rotating the pushrod until all lash is
removed. Now tighten the adjusting nut 1/2 full turn. This "centers" your
lifter.

After you have adjusted the above valves, rotate you engine 360 degrees
bringing the pointer around to the 0 TDC mark. This is TDC #6. Adjust the
following valves in the same manner:

INTAKE on cylinders 3,4,6,8
EXHAUST on cylinders 2,5,6,7

EOIC adjustment procedure seems to have alot of engine rotations and could cause the lifters to bleed down plus I have to take the spark plugs out

I did one engine the Merc way TDC firing #1 Adjust INTAKE on cylinders 1,2,5,7
EXHAUST on cylinders 1,3,4,8
then rotate 180 degrees to # 6 TDC Adjust INTAKE on cylinders 3,4,6,8
EXHAUST on cylinders 2,5,6,7

this way has only 2 revolutions. My intake manifold is on and engines are in the boatand the other with the procedure of
Intake Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!
• with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
• with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
• with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
• with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
• with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
• with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
• with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
• with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve

Exhaust Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

• with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
• with #5 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Exhaust Valve
• with #7 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Exhaust Valve
• with #2 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Exhaust Valve

I did this on the Port engine. This had alot of turns also, Lifters bled down so I had to crank the engine over to pump them up again to check adjustment.. Test both tomorrow

Update... Did starboard engine this way (see below) Perfect, no rocker noise EOIC procedure done on port motor. A few valves were still noisy. Very hard to do with intake manifold on and engines in boat. My 2 cents..................

TDC pointer at "0". Firing @ #1, You can now adjust the following valves:

INTAKE on cylinders 1,2,5,7
EXHAUST on cylinders 1,3,4,8

Loosen the adjusting nut until lash is felt by rotating the pushrod. Then
tighten the adjusting nut while rotating the pushrod until all lash is
removed. Now tighten the adjusting nut 1/2 full turn. This "centers" your
lifter.

After you have adjusted the above valves, rotate you engine 360 degrees
bringing the pointer around to the 0 TDC mark. This is
TDC firing @ #6. Adjust the following valves in the same manner:

INTAKE on cylinders 3,4,6,8
EXHAUST on cylinders 2,5,6,7

Curious as to what the intake manifold has to do with it that makes things hard?

Lifter bleed-down shouldn't be a problem, that's what the last 1/4-3/4 turn is for when you tighten the poly locks.
