Engine Oil Questions. What do you think i the best!

If you have read my other thread I had a fuel pressure regulator issue. That is fixed not but not before dumping fuel into my oil. So I am going to have it changed tomorrow but since I have only owned this boat for 2 weeks now I am not sure what oil I should run.

The engine is a Carbed Stroker 496 in my 27 Fountain Fever. I do have a call into the builder but have not heard anything yet.

What do you guys run?? The goods? The Bads? The Ugly's?:daz:

Any filter preferences?

I do live in northern MN so It will be changed again in a couple months when it gets winterized. Our air temps are usually between 65-85F every now and then over 90, but that is rare! Humidity can be 40-70% at times thought!!

Thanks, I am slowly learning here!

I use the wix racing filters. 51060R.

Valvoline VR1 is good stuff, and most parts stores stock it.

Chris, the oils that have been listed are all good, however I am not a fan of heavy straight weights for cooler morning start-ups.

Before this thread is over, you will be slammed with every brand of oil you have heard of plus oils from specialty blenders.

I would use a multi-viscosity product. I personally run a 20w50 in my 454. I would look for a product with a lot of zinc which is a anti-wear additive AND an anti-oxidant.

The anti-wear needs no explanation, but the anti-oxidant is what prevent the oil from getting thicker as time is put on the oil.

It is going to make no difference to you whether you run a petroleum, semi-synthetic, or full synthetic, as you will probably change the oil before any of those particular base stocks start to fail.

You really can't go wrong with the OEM stuff, last time I checked Mercury's 25w40, it had a good slug of anti-wear, but this was 2-3 years ago.

Any modern day oil of the proper viscosity you choose will work fine in your boat.

I personally run this product http://www.spectro-oils.com/motor-guard/ because of the seriously high concentration of zinc.

Hope this helps.

Ken

I second minxguy, I do run Mobil 1 15w-50 also with a Napa/Wix filter. Some of my friends use nothing but Merc, and a couple use Kendal 20w-50. See what the builder says, but many guys use what they are using because it is easy to get in their location.
