I have the 496 I have been poking a hole, but I heard of the loosen it up and it will drain also. Once I have fresh oil in the motor I pull the lanyard switch and turn the motor over a few times to get oil pushed back up then put the lanyard back on and fire it up get pressure right away.

do you poke the hole before draining the oil or during ?

It doesn't really matter. I do when I start so it has a longer time to drain out.

Use filters with an anti drainback for the reasons posted by Sydwayz.

Been doing it this way for years and never a drop spilled. Usually loosen it 1st thing then pump the oil out. By then the filter has already drained. wait awhile then finish pumping rest of oil out. No more tools required or modified to punch holes. What about the debris the filter caught? Have you not now made a passage way for the debris to reenter the oiling system by punching the filter?
But whichever way tickles your fancy is ok with me :)
