Quite a bit of bad info on this site regarding oil. This article above should be a sticky here.... I'm looking forward to hearing what BOB M has to say and recommend.

Valvoline VR1 Racing oil conventional 20-50 change it every 15 hrs

Ken is in the oil business, he always offers solid, statistical based advice. One approach is to ask all what is the best oil in a defined price range?..... $3-5 qt or $13 qt? The Mobil 1 20-50 motorcycle oil is now selling for under $10 qt....with high Zinc.

ZDDP is required in a oil as it is a multifunctional additive. It not only is an anti wear, but an anti-antioxidant, it help prevents the oil from thickening over time.

Roller lifters need less zinc than flat tappet lifters.

A 20w40 and a straight 40 are the same viscosity at 210F. The 20w side of the 20w40 will help in cold engine starts, the oil pressure and flow will be faster than a straight 40.

I am running 20w50 in a roller cam motor.

I run Rotella 15w40...

Same here Rotella T 15/40 - Diesel oil has all the extra zinc and additives you get in the racing oil without the cost.

Thanks for all the input. I was hoping that someone other than myself has had problems with lifters. I agree with all of you that running a light oil is not good.

kvogt 09-11-2013 11:44 AM

You never said what lifters your running and how much preload?

dozer 09-11-2013 02:13 PM

Not sure on the preload, but cam and lifters are Preditor

I wouldn't bet the house on that last statement.

You better check on that, recently catalytic converters have been added to all diesel vehicles. This means the zinc level will have to be lowered in the diesel oils as well, to protect the converter. Rotella has already lowered their zinc levels, and will continue to lower them in the next phase.
