1976 280 Trs
The motor has a small transmission attached to it not the typical borg warner unit.
Problem is in the reverse lock out switcing mechanism that sits on top of transmission. This reverse lockout swith will allow the power trim motor to trim in but not trum out. The power trim motor does get the message to go up and to go down and starts pumping but the reverse lock out mechanism will not allow the drive to rise. There is a cam and some type of detent swithching mechanism on top of the transmission. Has anyone had experience with these older units. I have another friend with the same problem in his 1982 trs with the symiliar transmission arrangement. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Tank U All |
correct me if i'm wrong here, cause i'm not familiar with the setup your talking about, but isnt that the neutral safty switch your talking about? I dont think that has anything to do with it.
What may be going on is the tilt sensors on the side of the drive may be going bad. ON my TRS's theres two on each drive. One is for the trim/tilt gauge and the other is for the trim/tilt pump. When it senses the drive all the way up or down it bypasses the pump so it doesnt get overloaded. I think the sensor may be going bad on you or you may need to adjust it. If I remember correctly the one with the black wires is for the gauge and the other one has a purple and green wires on it. Thats the one that goes to the pump. I think you can just dissconnect the wires and the pump should work but wont have the cutoff feature. (Dont quote me on that though!) Good luck :D |
You have a Merc trans. Call Matt Gilvey at T-N-T Custom Marine, 305 931-3157 he'll tell you how to fix it.

forget the lock out !..... you dont need it. just remove the two hoses from it and connect them together with a union. suppose to keep the drive from rising up, (trimming itself up) when your bacing up the boat. i bypassed mine years ago, with no problems

Like Dr. Dave says; You can splice the two hoses and trash everything in between. But eventually you will want to go to the newer hi volume pump with all the anti-backfeed features built into the valve body and be able to run your drive up or down in about 1/3 the time it takes with the old hi pressure - low volume stock unit. That was probably one of the best upgrades I made on my ole TRS. --- Jer
