I was confused about the lifters, too. So I called Crane when I decided to use the 168741 cam last summer. I use the 13532 lifters. All three of my engines (two in the boat, one spare) are Gen VI 502s. They all came with GM rollers and the 502/502 cams.

The 168741 has a "notch" on the front nose for your retainer plate that holds the cam in place. They also make the 741-grind for older BBCs that don't have the cam retainer plate 139741 is the part# I think.

I got this off the Martell Bros website FYI

"The recent closing of the Johnson/Hy-Lift plant has jeopardized the entire Automotive Industry with regard to availability of hydraulic and mechanical lifters. Johnson/Hy-Lift's demise and the resultant lifter shortages have also had a serious effect on cam and lifter kit assemblies at most of the cam manufacturers. Each manufacturer who has responded to our inquiries is dealing with the crisis in the best way they can, but all agree on two things: lifter prices will rise dramatically, and the shortages will exist easily into the third quarter of 2002.

Availability and pricing of Lifters and Cam & Lifter Packages will change daily and may not reflect current availability or cost. You will be notified prior to billing/shipping if there has been a price increase on any Lifter or Cam & Lifter Package that is ordered.

I know somebody that's sitting on a whole pile of them. The problem is that he's demanding $600 per set! Supply and demand.

The correct #'s
cam:139741=Mk4
168741=Gen 5,6
lifters: 13532-16
pushrods: 13628-16

I belive you only have to change the pushrods on a mk4 swap, but I'd check with crane. That is the combo I used and so far so good.
Dont forget the cam button if yours is a mk4
I paid $425 for the lifters from summit last year..so $600 aint to bad if you really want em and thats whats keepin you from boating.

Dan
BTW Check with Lanes Automotive in Mi. They stock them, and theres a place in Grand Rapids that wholesales speed stuff. Call Jim Valako for the # or maybe he can get them for you.

Wow $600...that's some "timber pricing" up there Cord!

I only paid $375.00 last time, but I guess it's the supply and demand thing. I think I will try and disassemble and "micro clean" my old ones, anything is better than sitting on the sidelines. :(

Thanks guys

I've heard that a roller lifter is a component that should never be reused. I'm guessing that it has something to do with marine engine loading, because it's perfectly fine to reuse one in a car. Guess that if you want to reuse yoursw, just be sure to replace them over winter.

Hang on there sport. ;)

The 139741 cams are used in GenV 502's too.
This cam needs both a cam button and thrust washer. Also uses the shortened pushrods too. Lifter #'s are correct.

The Gen6 motors use retainer plates for the cams, hence #168741 cam, which has the snout.

These both are roller cams.
