496 quick oil change?
 

Sucked it out the dip stik last time, Is there a quicker
way? motor is a 2002, understand there may be a
plug. couldn't get screw on pump to work, motor is
too close to back of seat. thanks for help, J.C.

This engine has a drain hose attached to the pan. Some boat manufactures have a wire connected to the drain plug that pulls the hose out the drain plug for draining. If not, then look around the top of the engine. The hose maybe laying by the valve cover and has a brass plug in the end.

Rick's correct.
All 496's come from Merc with this drain hose feature.
Look for the black hose extending out from under the oil pan or laying in the bilge...

Also, like Rick said(some mfg's)mine is attached to my bilge drain plug...When I pull that out, the oil hose comes along with it.

Open the little brass fitting and let the oil drain while you have a beer or two...I must say, that it is not the fastest method. It usually takes mine about 1/2 hour to drain when hot.

Does the boat have to be on the trailer to use this feature?

NO

The drain hose is tetherd(sp) directly to your bilge drain plug. If not, it should be.:eek:

rv/daze - upon delivering my 01 340 PQ, I have the Merc Installation manual for the 496HO's. Merc provided the hose and the tethered plug with the engine. Can't speak on Fountain or an 02 model, but you paid for the "whole" kit.

I just did my engines last weekend. Its real nice and I can fit a 5 gallon pail under my trailer.

ps. it takes 2.6 boat sodas to get the 12+ quarts out!:D

I appreciate the response, I'll do it on the
trailer fri when I pull it out. Sounds better
than the dip stik trick. 2.6 will do it? I'm
doing the drive shower too, better have 6.

I have one of those drill pumps that I attach to the drain tube. It takes to long for it to drain out otherwise.

Hey Kentz - don't you mean 18 quarts! And in my opinion, there is always something else I need to do on the boat while the oil is draining out.....including a boat soda! Plus all spills now go on the ground and not in the bilge or on the rear bench.

P.S. The tethered drain plug is a Merc part cause I broke the wire on one by mistake and got a new one from them.
