Engine keeps on runing
1983 cig with carb 420
Engine starts ans runs (was just put in after rebuild) engine wont shut off unless you pull the connector out of the thunderbolt 4 module plug the module back in hit start and it runs any idea what could be wrong here? also 1 bank (side) of gages dont operate now...as if there is no power there to energise Any ideas on that one? |
use your trusty test light on the gauges, If they have power its a ground issue. take same test light to the motor, the ignition has power when it shouldn't..work your way backwards..... if you haven't found the problem by the time you get to the plug the problem is under the dash. start with the ignition switch. Does the lanyard kill it?? What did you change?

Check the wiring on your alternator. Make sure it matches the other engine.

Try to disconect purple wire from starter solenoid , if solenoid is faulty it can backfeed power to ignition coil .

I did not remove or put the engines in, and I did not run it this is the feed back from the mechanic, who installed (of course he tells me this after I brought it home) if he gives me a line of crap then I kick him off the boat and it looks like I am doing it myself (I anticipate kicking him of the boat) hard to get good mechanics these days...normally I do this my self , but with the weather change coming and work schedule I taught Id job the install out OOPS, thanks for all of your help everyone unfortunately the lanyards are missing |
alternator wired wrong.

here is more info, from what was found last night
Port Engine What started the issue is with a start box (hand held run switches) the engine would start and run, but will not shut down without disconnecting the ignition module What I saw yesterday ................. With the key in ON position The power appears to be dead to starting solenoid (0 Volts) and gage group appears not to be energized With the key OFF position The power appears to have 12.7 volts at the coil This would explain a battery draw when the switch is off With the key in either position the starter dies not activate the starter I do know that the ignition was not wired backwards as it is the same as the one nex to it, and this condidtion did not occour prior to pulling engines |

color match and pin locate the engine harnes to the big connector, follow thru to terminal end. he may have the wrong wire going to the wrong place energizing the ignition
