Distributor collar needed??

Went to drop the TB IV distribtutor (92577) in my 502 and it goes to far in? It feels like it is spinning the oil pump but it does not engage to cam gear and will spin?? If I pull it up about 3/8-1/2" it will then engage the cam gear and it seems normal??? Does it sound like I need a collar to raise up the distributor? Is this normal? What size collar do I need? I am a Mopar guy and know my way around hemis and big blocks but I am not feeling too warm and fuzzy right now?? TIA TBF

Dist is 90577...... I am using a new rpm air gap intake no milling......

1BIGJIM 11-14-2013 09:21 PM

Sounds normal to met. I run the same Thunderbolt IV on brand new Gen VI 502s. I changed gears for billet rollers and there are two different shaft diameters but that should not make a difference. When engaged it should be fush with intake. There is a gasket make sure that is there or you will have a leak.

is the gear installed up side down?

tpabayflyer 11-14-2013 10:45 PM

Why yes it is! Eff....... Thanks a bunch Mike..... I had to get a special gear to use with the billet cam and I installed it upside down? Gear is at the bottom now so that would make sense why it's effed up..... Changing it around now..... Thanks Bro, I owe you one!

tpabayflyer 11-15-2013 09:03 AM

Great catch! Dr. Mike was spot on with his diagnosis!

I appreciate you guys chiming in here to help a newb... I have been a Mopar guy for 30 years and know them in and out. Its the little details that always get you and I just don't have
the experience with the marine stuff..... My marine guy just happened to find a brand new, in the box, Thunderbolt IV 24* ignition module with pigtail connector yesterday so I should be able to get this thing running today!

mike tkach 11-16-2013 02:16 PM

thats good news,keep us posted.

tpabayflyer 11-18-2013 03:26 AM

So far so good! Fired it up tonight and it sounds pretty
Beefy! Got a few water leaks to take care of but no oil leaks..... Set the timing at 7* before and primed the carb bowls and it fired off so fast it scared me!! Dogs went running!! Initial fuel pressure was 9 1/2 with the mech pump and I was not happy with that but the Holley 850 HP I was using did not skip a beat....it settled down to 8psi after a few minutes........I have a mighty demon 850 but the damn fuel inlets use a special fitting so I took the carb off a 528 hemi and it worked pretty good! Timing is set at 34* now and has great throttle response..... Motor sounds like it will be a torque monster and should have it in by the weekend....

waybomb 11-18-2013 07:30 PM

Just fyi - the v8-24 module does not have all the timing in until 3700 rpm.
If you want the TBIV / TBV manual in pdf - send me your email addy.

tpabayflyer 11-19-2013 12:51 AM

Ok thanks for the offer....... my email is my screen name at the yahoo site... Yes, I could see the timing continu to move as I increased rpm..... This engine has a 4-7/2-3 cam lobe swap and it has quite a snarl when revved? Has a different sound for sure......... The Dogs did not like It one bit!

waybomb 11-19-2013 07:14 PM

Sent a pdf your way

You just have to love it when your engine leaves animals (and children) cowering in fear! :D

tpabayflyer 11-20-2013 10:12 PM

I have the engine on a stand at St. Pete airport with a row of hangars right behind me so I think that made it a lot louder! But it fired up instantly and aggressively..... I have no mufflers at all in my Donzi so this thing is going to be loud! At least I have the Corsa CAptain call so I can run it through the prop and be a good neighbor for late night ops!...... Thanks again Waybomb for the ignition info.... TBF
