What have you guy's repainted your drives with.

Paint, powdercoat what works what doesn't? Is it a send it out job or can I do it over the winter?

When I bought my boat the drive was pretty rough. I pulled it for a winter project and spent some time with a sanding block. Primed it with galvanizing primer and painted it with a spray can. I need to touch it up Powder coating would be great but the drive has to be baked. I would only do that if it had to come apart anyway. I need to touch it up and may just leave the lower part in primer.

I saw on ship shape TV
apply your zinc paint very lightly and then paint with you final paint. He said to let the zinc paint get tacky but don't let it dry.
i have had drives painted in a body shop and they last forever. baking is the key word I believe

i have had excellent results using imron, be sure to use a zinc cromate primer or wash primer. imron gets very hard and lasts.

What did you guy's use to remove the old paint.
Mine seems to be coming off in large flakes. What is a good filler to blend in some rough spots aswell as fether in a nose cone.

AIRPLANE STRIPPER softens the paint on the drive and you can scrape it off in big soft hunks.

I got mine at an automotive paint supply through a buddy's wholesale account. Somebody said something about the stuff not being available to a nonpro, but who knows.

russ, i just finished the hellacious project of re doing my twin trs' with bullet noses, trim tabs etc.......the full rear of the boat......i agree with the airplane stripper, that stuff is amazing!!!!!! after that i used all sorts of air tools to get off the rest.......then a lot of hand sanding, preparation is key!!!!!! i used an epoxy based self etching primer.....2 coats, sanding in between coats and after, then applied awlgrip with the spray gun(if you know someone with a sprayer get in touch with him, it makes the job easier!) sprayed a light coat of awlgrip, it tacks up then go in for the kill....tape EVERYTHING OFF!! to fill in the voids of the bullet nose, DO NOT use automotive bondo, i know guys who have, it doesnt last more than a few runs, use either marine tex or an epoxy......let me know if you need any other advice/hints on this project!
