do most of you run chokes on your carbs?
what are the pros and cons
|
I have never had a performance boat that had a choke on the carb.
Never had a problem unless it was very cold out. And even then it just takes a little finesse to start and couple minutes to warm up. |
what is a carb?do they still make them?ok,just kidding, most carbed boats do not use a choke because it,s pretty warm out when we go boating.
|
Dont usee them on my cars or boats

Even though a lot of boats don't have chokes ,if you are asking the question ,you may be happier with a choke. Lots of younger people don't know how to start a motor ....They want to "turn it on ".. To "turn a motor on" means fuel injection or a properly adjusted choke
|
Mercury used them on most of the carb engines. HP500's, 420's, 600sc's, 800sc's, and the 330/365/370/400HP engines had quadrajets with chokes. Really not needed, but can help make them a little easier to start and stay running for the first start up of the day.

Cut the entire choke housing off of a Holley type carb and it will improve airflow. I did it on my hot rod. My boat is EFI.

I wouldn't waste my time milling the choke tower off a Holley. Many tests have been done on this in the past 30 years, the cfm gain is minor. Even if you gain 25cfm, (most tests gained 10-20) it won't make a bit of difference in a boat other than looking cooler.
If the engine needs more cfm your better off getting a larger carb or a proform main body . Just my opinion. |
I had stock 502 mag with quadrajets (with chokes) and now they are Scorpion 600 hp 540 ci with 950 quick fuel carbs with no chokes. It starts the same or better now and doesnt need the warm up time to stay idling like it did before.

Ditto!
