496 .. non HO rev limiter??
 

My bud has a 21 foot glastron CVX that hits the limiter at 45-4600. The boat my need more prop but i think it would do well to run at higher rpm. He currently maxes out at 67 mph at 4600. Ive seen boat tests where they run these motors to 5400. I think thats a lil high but 5000ish cant be harmful??
Is there a way the dealer can alter the limiter. Its a volvo setup. thanks sj

I just don't think there are very many people with the new 496's yet. Merc rev limiters are set 100-150 rpms over the max WOT operating range. The first thing I would do is double check the accuracy of the tach.
What's the WOT operating range??? 4400-4800??? If so, the rev limiter should be 4900+/- rpms. Non HO's will not turn 5400 rpms.

Even though the operating range of a non-HO is 4400-4800, peak HP on this motor is reach at 4600rpm (375HP). So, I'm not sure what good raising the limiter would be if you reach the point of diminishing returns at 4600rpm. Raising the rev limiter won't raise HP.

More prop is just going to lower his rpms more. Verify the tach accuracy first and verify its hitting the rev limiter. Like I said, the rev limiter should be at 4900+ rpms.
