Braze or Weld Oil Pickup
Should I braze or mig weld my oil pickup tube to the oil pump ?

Well, I'll tell you this: if you elect to have someone MIG it, remove the end cover, gears and bypass spring and go real slow on the weld. DO NOT over penetrate with the weld. I had someone weld the entire circumference of my pickup, and the weld burned through the pickup resulting in a big piece of slag that ended up getting sucked into the gears of the pump. Not a good thing!

TIG is always the answer.

I know they are completely different welding methods, but I have always gotten mig and tig confused. I just pay the guy that does it. I know brazing isn't the way.

I had one that was brazed in about 10 years ago. It cracked and fell out while running about 50 miles down bay from my ramp. I saw it in time and the engine was not hurt but boy was it a pain in the A$$ getting towed to a near by beach, finding someone to bring truck and trailer, pulling out on a beach, and then having to pull the engine to fix it.
I am sure a weld can break too, just never personally had it happen. |
Normally it only takes a spot weld to keep the interference fit from moving.

yup i put a spot about 3/8 ths wide with my mig welder never had a prob. been doin it for 40 yrs now .
