Fuel Pump Pushrod

When I was installing the new fuel pump pushrod it got tight about 3/4 of the way in so I stopped I didn't wont it to get stuck. It's a Howards cams pushrod .500x5.750 I put assembly lube on it before I pushed it in. The block is a gen iv. I never had this happen before they always slide right in, anybody have any ideas.

Did u try to rotate the motor like 90 degrees or so? I like to use grease on the pushrod so it stays up in the bore and will not fall out.

Vinny P 03-17-2014 07:05 PM

Have you had a pushrod in that block before? Do you have another pushrod to try? Maybe try to roll the Howards pushrod on a piece of glass to see if its bent.

Ya do what Vinny said. had one with an unnoticeable tweak/bend it bound up. found it to have the slightest arc in it. good luck

The pushrod is brand new,I'll try rotating the engine.

I know on a sbc if you use too long a bolt in one of the front accessory holes it'll interfere with the push rod, don't know if that's the case with your block.

Rotate the engine. Its probably on the raised portion of the cam lobe. Throw some grease on it so it stays up, and install the pump. Should be good to go.

It could be a dirty/rusty hole. Has motor been apart a while

A dirty hole can cause issues in any application.

mike tkach 03-17-2014 10:20 PM

warning,a dirty hole can be a health hazard.

Crude Intentions 03-17-2014 10:30 PM

You have to be very carefully with dirty holes. Usually smelly too. Always do the 2 finger test before sticking anything else in a hole.

man o man some funny sht. push rod must slid in and out smoothly, no bind. tube could be out of round new or old ck. it out. :daz:

Black Baja 03-18-2014 06:36 AM

Haven't you guys ever heard of soap and water. Regardless if its dirty or not it should be cleaned.

Budman II 03-18-2014 08:36 AM

And also keep in mind that if your rod has a bend in it it might not slide into the hole smoothly.

motor 03-18-2014 08:59 AM

I knew the comments would come when I commented on a dirty hole .But a dirty hole is better than no hole

I'CE 03-18-2014 10:13 AM

2 ea. of his or her own choice, prefer, clean, tight and not worn out, lol

Craney 03-18-2014 08:15 PM

Found the problem, I dipped my whole rod in assembly lube which made the hole a little to snug for the rod to slide into.I pulled my rod out cleaned it up and just a little lube on the tip made slide in nice!!
