Bad Head Gasket or what ??? Help
OK so I have a 502 with edelbrock aluminum heads. Motor was rebuilt about 100 hours ago and 5 years ago. Motor ran great all last season and I went to winterize it I found the dreadful milkshake. Now the last run I did I checked oil before run and it was fine, but never checked it after the run. Following week is when I went to winterize and found milkshake but oil on dipstick wasn't raised at all. So I winterized it and changed all oils with anticipation of fixing it in spring. So now I pull intake off today and gaskets don't look bad But i do see a little corrosion on the aluminum head just below rear water cross over just above #8 cylinder and looks like it was leaking down. Valley pan is dry but I see puddled water around the #8 lifters. I cleaned it all up and new intake gaskets and all should be fine. Well I go to turn motor over and its hydrolocked. I pull all even number plugs and motor turns over and shoots pink anti freeze all over. Questions is....Am I wrong in thinking it has to be a head gasket leaking? or is it possible some how its leaking somewhere else into cylinder? I just need to know where to go next. My concern is if one head gasket is leaking should both heads be done?

likely your intake gaskets. What part number and material type. Are you still using the stock MPI intake?

I did replace intake gasket today. I didn't start it yet but that's when I noticed water in cylinder. How does water get from intake into cylinder?.

Hard anodized Eddy 'marine heads' or plain unprotected aluminum ?
Reason I ask, the heads could be corroded and doing all this. Not uncommon. Either way I'd pull motor, pull atleast top end off and see what you got. Btw: I've seen plenty of engines bend connecting rods from hydrolocking. Another reason why I said to pull it. |
i agree with sb.pull the engine,do a leak down test and go from there.

Should not have anti freeze in all cyls on one bank with a leaking intake? take a real close look like SB suggests!

common,,i see it all the time,,the antifreeze will leak into cylinder #8 if the intake gasket is leaking..i would oil up the cylinder and do a compression test and see what the numbers are,,next i would remove the hose's at the t-stat housing and look onr of the hose's from one side to the other at the housing..i have a special fitting i made up to pressureise the block but you can do the same with a garden hose ,,so stick a garden hose into the intake hose that leads to the seapump and clamp it tight,,just crack the hose to pressureise the block and listen and watch the cylinders for water poaring out of them,,if you see no water and the pressure dont drop after tuening the hose off then i would run it and keep a eye on the oil..
