Oil consumption
Just need an answer from somebody who is experiencing a similar problem...
Is it normal for a Gen V 540 motor to burn oil ??? I was told because I have forged pistons tolerances were set up with more clearance and thats why I burn some oil. Motor now has 15 hours on it. Would too large of jets in the carb contribute to this problem??? I am running 84 primary, with 94 on secondary. Carb is a 800cfm holley with mechanical secondarys Sheikman |
it's common,
My blow 454 magnum does it, so do the twin 502 MPI magnums also. Usually when you are throttle happy. |
The factory 502's are using oil. The reason is that the motor is a stock GM piece and they are set up with low tension oil control rings. The problem is that your motor is not factory, so it shouldn't be using much oil. And no, the carb jetting wouldn't affect the oil consumption...unless something was really wacked and damage resulted...

My 1997 merc 454 mag burned a qt every 4-6 hrs. Factory said it was normal. I put a procharger on it and it stopped!

What is the recommended gap on a supercharged 454 w/ forged pistons ?
