&%#@ Socketless fittings!

How on earth do you guys put these things on?!! I pretty well killed myself with the first one. The second one, I clamped the hose in the vice, lubed the fitting up real well and it went in OK, but Damn! These things are tough! What's the secret?

pb 08-19-2002 02:47 PM

Cord,
How about soaking the hose in very hot water for about 5 or 10 minutes. I believe the hose would be more plyable. Then I would lube up the fitting real good and push it on. Just a thought. Good luck.

BTW. We used the hot water method while installing new insert for the rub rail on a 47' Fountain. That insert material is very hard until it was heated up. But you must work fast.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I could also try using my trusty heat gun!

Say, I've been meaning to PM you...on the OT exhaust, how much water are you injecting?

jaf302 08-19-2002 09:45 PM

I've had good luck with putting the fitting in the vise and LOTS of wd40 in the hose, push like hell and don't stop untill its seated. good luck, Paul

Yea, that was pretty well my technique. I went so far as to fill the pocket between the barbs with WD.

You're gonna laugh, Cord,

But I got so desparate with the -8s that I lubed them up real good with K-Y ! (wouldn't want to degrade the rubber with anything else :D  ). I found the other sizes not to be so bad and figured that the lube would desolve quickly. I carefully clamped them with rags and used a vice-grip on the hose with plenty of rags and did a hand-stand with it.

EX20 08-20-2002 09:50 AM

What do you keep K-Y around for?:D :D :D

Socketless fittings. What else?

pachangalpina 08-20-2002 10:48 AM

Go to buy parts and mention "MARINE" and you will need plenty.  :D

Not to mention knee pads and mouthwash, so that the many self-esteem challenged ego-supercharged rednecks will take your business.

Some of these guys must have been kicked in the nuts by Nelson and Kearny for the first 10 years of their lives. When you walk in wanting something fixed, and one of your kneepads has sliped down accidentily, they kick YOU in the nuts first.

Why do we go back so many times??

Glad I don't have to behave that way to make a living.
