Replacing 555 on 496 with MEFI Controller

Anyone out there done this?

And I can't find enough reading to determine whether or not the 4 can do digital tach? The harness is easy. Got that already. Just looking to see what MEFI has worked best for you 4, 4a, 4b or 5?

Thanks!

Have you made any progress? I know the 4s will run crank fired ignition like your 496 has.

Tyler Crockett did this on quite a few, I believe he used mefi4'bs, Smitty

Have you looked into the Holley HP EFI systems? I'm running one on my 565 with crank fired ignition and coil packs. Alex Haxby has a very nice thread going on the system.

I have done it.... I used MEFI4B's and got rid of the 555 so i could adjust and the program when i put whipples on them .... the volvo penta version of the 49HO used the MEFI4B also

I switched from the MEFI one to Holley HP. Couldn't be happier.

The HP is much easier for a rookie tuner like me, when compared to the MEFI.

have to ask digital tach meaning smartcraft or something else. Smartcraft only relates to ECM / PCM 555. Also I do not think MEFI 4/a will work because the 496 is distributorless has cam and crank sensor. I am sure MEFI 4b and 5 and 6 will work for a 496. I could be wrong about MEFI 4/a but again I do know 4b will work for the 496.

I have seen MEFI 4 done with a digital display but it was a whole display. Also I know Boostpower has done it as well with digital display gauges as a whole unit. Want to say he used MEFI 3 or 4 if I remember correctly. Neither one was from a 496 app.
