Hardin Gen 7 Sea Pump Install

Those of you who have upgraded to the Hardin stainless steel water pump for the 496HO - the instructions say gasket can be used with Permatex #3 sealant. Is this a must do and if so, do you cover the whole gasket with sealant or just around edges of both sides?
