Alpha hit something no forward or reverse

Out with a friend last night just put new prop on and of course he hit something. Idled for a minute. Wouldn't get on plane. No forward or reverse. Small ding in prop but intact.
Any ideas? Thanks

Budman II 06-18-2014 07:34 AM

Doesn't sound good. Any noise coming from the drive? Does the prop spin freely? I would pull plug and check magnet for metal.

thirdchildhood 06-18-2014 07:42 AM

If it moves at idle speed maybe you just spun a hub.

beaver 3 06-18-2014 08:11 AM

Sounds like a spun hub to me. Or somehow broke the lower shift cable.

No noise, appears to be solid hub not rubber insert. Pulling it out to inspect later today. Think its broke.

Verticle drive shaft broke right under the upper splines where it's undercut

Wes Burmark 06-18-2014 12:14 PM

Mainshaft?

Thanks guys. us1 sounds like the winner from my research.

Go to SEI's website (Stern Drive Engineering). Alpha lowers are about $850 with a 3 year no questions warranty (yes that includes impact damage). Have had one of their Bravo lowers and never had an issue. They ship really fast to. I wouldn't bother with a rebuild when the SEI costs about 1/2 as much.

Does it overheat?

mbam is asking cuz if it broke at top of shaft, water pump won't turn. boat will get hot quik. but if it will idle, shaft could be broke so it'll turn drive-pump at low power and slip as soon as you hit gas. another option is craigslist-ebay. there are lotsa alpha drives out there.

Up date. The plastic Piece inside prop was jacked. Had a spare everything is fine. When does worst case turn into best case. Thanks for the help everyone.
I have not had an alpha in a long time. Was not familiar with the parts.

SB 06-20-2014 08:22 AM

Good to hear. We gave worst case after we where told solid hub. Oh well. He's back on the water.

Everyone wishes they where that lucky. LOL.

thirdchildhood 06-20-2014 08:39 AM

That's good to hear. The part broke like it was supposed to and saved your drive! :)

fountain27ho496 06-20-2014 09:53 AM

Exactly, Its my buddies boat. Sold the Fountain and its my way out on the water. Different set up than I am used to.

I agree. Furthermore we have Murphy's Law and what we call Gowdy Yourself. Gowdy can be replaced by 'Jinx.'

IE: If you assume/think it will be easy, it won't be because 'You just Gowdy'd Yourself." . Even if it should be easy.

You can sometimes, not all the time, reverse this by thinking/fearing the worst. So, I believe this is what happened to the OP. LOL. He was smart enough to think the worst, and thus why caught a break.
