crane 741 cam and stock roller lifters
I am wondering if it is OK to use the stock style lifters in a gen vi 502. The cam installed is crane 168741. .610/.632 lift. Crane says to use crane lifters with lift over .570.
Are they just trying to make money or are different lifters required? |
Do what Crane says.
MY 2¢ With my 741 I used Crane lifters, springs, rockers they recommend. |
Baja,
The GM OEM roller lifter will accept a range value of 0.326” lobe lift (0.555” valve lift) to .335” lobe (.6035” valve) to insure the lifter body will not drop below the base of the retainer plate when the lifter is on the base circle. If you attempt to utilize an OEM lifter to a .372” lobe cam you will need to mock up the engine to finished spec and validate that dimension. Bob |
I used a set of stock lifters on a .625 lift cam and they worked fine. Just make sure that they do not hit the retainer plate at the top of the lift and make sure they don't go below the plate when on the base circle.

It’s important to differentiate between stock style lifters.
The GM OEM stock lifter is problematic due to the shorter body and likely will not have the dimensional length to accommodate the specified cam. Many of the Mercury Marine stock lifters are actually the Crane/Morel .300” long body lifter which is compatible with a .372” lobe lift on the Crane Cam. |
The other thing to keep in mind is that the stock hyd lifters may not be able to handle the increased spring pressure required for proper valvetrain stability with a cam that has that kind of lift. The stock lifter also has a relatively small wheel on it. My advice is to spend the money now and get your valvetrain set up properly. You will regret it if you "cheap out" in this area. Ask me how I know.

I am asking as this is the set up in a 502 I bought here a while back. The engine was professionally assembled from what I was told but before putting this one into service I wanted to get this figured out.

Baja,
Email me a photo and I will let you know what you have. Bob |
Which lifter would work for the 741 in a gen VI? Do i really have to spend 800 bucks for lifters??? |
Members been having good luck with the Johnson's. Do to the number of hyd roller failures you don't wanna go cheap. People will recommend what they've had good luck with and that's good. Isky Red zones, morels, crower sd hippo, cranes iskys gonna have to dig in a little deeper. |
thats a 525 EFI bump stick, stock dog bone lifters for that cam do just fine
|
With the blessing of Eddie Young, I reused my stock ZZ502 dog bone lifters on my Gen6 and the fit was great. The lifters bottomed flush to the top of the dog bone and there was a good 1/8” left before it would start to lift it. There are some folks that speculate that they can’t hold higher spring pressure but I can’t say yet either way. |
Just to be clear I’m using the Comp Cams 525EFI clone that has identical lift and duration, and Comp recommended their own dog bone lifters that are identical to GM with that cam. The 741 may have a different base circle. |
The comp cam should work with cheap lifters. This is what i found: Crane 168741 236/244 298/306 0.610/0.632 112 lobe 525 EFI 236/244 298/306 0.610/0.632 114 lobe comp cam 01-446-11 235/243 289/297 0.610/0.627 114 lobe Lifters for comp cam are 900-16 and costs $214, but i don‘t know if they work for the other both. Other question is if the comp cam makes less hp. The 114 lobe could be good against water reversion. |

Fwiw, the Comp Cams short travel lifters are the exact same height as the stock GM units, so even after you set up the geometry you can switch them out if need be without reinventing the valvetrain. You will need new pushrods with a new cam. I think mine needed about 1/4” shorter. The reason I went with the stock lifters was they had low hours and we’re proven to work. It seems like everything I read said to buy two sets of lifters just to get enough that would work. |
You bought 2 sets of lifters for one build? You must have 4 valve heads LOL. |
