Sea water/fuel pump questions. Leaking oil.

A friend of mine just installed a new motor. It's rigged with a sea pump that has provision for the fuel pump. He's running an electric pump and there's a block off plate over the fuel pump hole. It's leaking oil from somewhere. My question is does there need to be oil in the fuel pump reservoir even though there is no fuel pump mounted. - Do the sea pump bearings need the oil, are they sealed and we can run the unit without oil in the res? Thanks

Kurt normally they don't need the oil they are sealed on both sides w grease in them on a pump without the fu pump ... However when fuel pump was added there is a seal in only 1 side of the front brng .. Sorry to say but if it's leaking its cause gas got in there already .. If you drain the oil you will find it won't last long as any grease will be dissolved .. There easy to rebuild I've done a ton of them brg # is 6204

the bearings are not sealed and need the oil...i just rebuilt one of those pumps...and installed sealed bearings....but i took one of the seals off the inside part and cleaned all the grease out of the bearing.....my thoughts are having the extra seal on the outside up against the main shaft seal will help keep the oil inside better...we'll see in time :)

Old bearing on left...new bearing on right with seal in place before i removed one. :)
