Removing CATs on new 8.2L motor
I have a buddy who just bought a 2014 Four Winns 265 that with the new 8.2L with big single CATs on each side. He hates how quiet it is!!
I see that Whipple offers PCM reflashing. https://whipplesuperchargers.com/ind...&product_id=54 What exhaust will work with this? He has the 380HP base version with Smartcraft DTS.... Wants it to be louder and bump the HP a bit. Will any 502 stuff work on it?? |
The heads and intake on your app r from Edelbrock and the Cat is not as restrictive as you think. Actually Merc and Volvo pick up a tad horsepower when the Cats came into play because of the added 2- O2 input and 2 - O2 output sensors that was never installed before without the Cats. The O2 sensors reporting back to the ECM has measured more precisely the air fuel ratio hence a tad increase in Hp. Also removing the Cats on a 3 year old to brand new boat voids all the complete warranties. I would wait till the warranties are over with, then see what options are out there. Just my 2C. All marine CAT engines have a 3 year / 480 hour warranty which ever comes first unless you buy the BS extended warranty.
|
The boat is literally a week old! lol
Its more that it was advertised as going 65 mph and he's only 55mph. Also its much quieter than he wants. He had a previous 4 winns with a 350 with side exhaust that was much louder! So he's disappointed that his new boat with a bigger motor is quieter and slower. |
The heat generated by the new cats robs power, as it heats the intake air. Extra vents were needed for the 33AT that we installed them in. I think the same for Sunsation.
Rambocj7, is the boat now running at altitude? |
They need 800 degrees to even start to work properly. Plus run your boat out of gas and it will blow a hole straight through the cat. Also water reversion will do the same and ruin it as soon as the water hits the cats. Also the missing / miss fires of ignition components over time can kill the cat(s). Raw fuel as well and High Zinc & Phos based motor oils will kill them over time as well..
Funny your new boat since 2010 under 500 hp has to meet these very strict marine emissions but the billions of Autos in Florida do not need a emission test to drive up and down Florida all day long. No inspection at all, this completely puzzles me especially if the auto or big work truck is even road worthy along with passing any form of emission testing. I understand for a cleaner earth but lets start with all the states that do no have any emission testing period for the billion of autos running around. Just my 2C. |

I call it being part of the 1% group, we are too easy to pick on. EPA makes a stink about everything, but if a politician or the EPA is looking for justification of their jobs, they just attack the 1 percenters and lose very little votes. Motorcycles, snowmobiles, jet skis, boats, atvs have all taken a beating in the past 10 years. |

It sounds like your friend spent a lot of money on something he didn't really want? Is it through prop exhaust?
|
even in no emissions test states removing cats is illegal. if a cop sees they ain't there...big ticket. i don't know if the same is true for boats with cats yet, but it will be in time. so if you pull them, keep them safe and with the hardware need to reinstall them. they are also EXPENSIVE!! does his boat have those muffler tips on the exhaust outlets? that's whats gotta go...
|
Florida used to have full inspection through the seventies and emission testing ran a little longer. They claimed it was no longer worth the cost because the majority of cars were passing (newer cars on the road). Hence, the POS Brown Corolla with one wheel brakes and no tail lights was born (favored by those fortunate enough to make it to the US,but not able to obtain a license or insurance) .God Bless America!

I applaud FL for ridding of car inspections. It is a total, absolute scam anyhow.

So if a completely NON road worthy auto that could not pass inspection in other states is ok to drive around in Florida . Really what if that auto with bald tires or rusted out brakes could not stop in time and slammed into your auto at a red lite. I bet you would change your mind then.
Not everyone in Florida drives a nice auto plus saltwater damage of brakes, radiators and under parts of the auto is very dangerous. Who am I to say about whats good in Florida since I live in Texas. A lot we have a home on the East coast of Florida currently for the past 30 years on the water and what hunk of junk our auto became just sitting in no time. Anytime I visit, yes a lot of very nice cars driving around but what a bunch of rust buckets driving around as well that would not pass our state inspection in DFW. There is more to a vechicle inspection than emission over here. Thank whomever for putting some safety into the mix. Even if you have one bald tire over here you failed the state inspection. |

New Hampshire's state inspection program absolutely focuses on safety. Without this program there would be a huge amount of deathtraps on the road. As it is, there are plenty of unethical shops that will just lick-and-stick your car for the quick $45 bucks. Myself, I could care less if they end up in a tree, it is my wife and kids I am worried about these clams plowing into.

Yup. Totally agree with DonziMatt in all regards.
We (Matt and I) are in a heavy salt use for winter area. Cars/trucks turn to schit very quick, Roads get very rough, especially because of winter freezing / rain storms / heavy trucks / etc, etc - so so ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, and etc, etc are constantly needing to be replaced. I perform Inspections the same on all cars - be it my mom, sister, wife, kid, myself, and all customers. Yes, I failed my kids car once. He doesn't know how to work on cars , so it had to sit there until I fixed it a few days later. If it's unsafe, it is unethical for it to drive down the road. For the driver, passenger, and other cars on the road. Matt, one of the famous lick and sticks 1/4 mile from me is now not licking and sticking. Seems NH is getting better to keep these operations from happening. Anyway - whomever calls BS on this needs to spend just a day or tow in my shop. Tons of 150-200K + mile cars/trucks over 8-10 yrs old. Rot is very real on most vehicles 10yrs or older. Put it this way, very few pre-2000 yr vehicles in our area. Why ? Rot ! |

WTF do you know about our inspection program? I performed inspections in Mass and I thought it was a total ripoff, very little focused on safety and very much focused on OBD testing.
NH inspects brakes, suspension, undercarriage rust, seatbelts, exhaust, anything that is a true safety concern is checked, and the rules are very clear. You go ahead and believe what you want that it is a vast government conspiracy, but I GUARANTEE you if NH did not perform inspections, our accident rates would definitely be higher. |
LOL - Matt, I'd probably move. Too many beat up POS suspensions and way too many near frameless cars/trucks here in NH.
I'm pretty serious that I wouldn't want to live here / drive here if we had no inspections. I send a good amt of vehicles out of here to the scrap yard that I make no $$$$ on repairs (because the vehicle can't be repaired) or even charging for a sticker. Pismo had obviously never been under cars/trucks in our area, thus he has no business telling us our business. Moraly - screw business and the state for now - we have to check out the vehicles driving down the street as too many are worse than just unsafe. |
How do all the modified vehicles pass inspections?
Seems emissions wouldn't pass and do they pass lifted trucks? |
When Florida was requiring inspections, it was done at a Fl State run facility. They only charged a couple bucks and if you failed , no charge for retest. They checked brakes, exhaust, tires, HEADLIGHT AIM,and it wasnt that big a deal or very expensive.
|
On the 8.2's ,If you showed proof the engine was being used for repower and replacing an older motor, you could purchase with cats removed but keep full warranty.

If your hull is a 2009 and back yes you can get a NON CAT engine thru most OEM marine engine manus. In California its 2007 and back. This is for repowering bellow 500 hp. Merc and Volvo will need your Hull ID (HIN) to make sure about the repower CAT or No CAT. Any marine engine 500 hp and above currently do not mandate a CAT engine.
This all started by CARB (in California) for all model year 2008 engines below 500 hp and by the EPA with the rest of the USA for model year 2010 all marine engines under 500 hp. The 4.3 - 262 CID did have a pass until year 2012 model year because of green carbon credits that the OEM marine engines builders had in the kitty persay. . Next Malibu boats and Indmar Marine engines started using CATS in the marine engine apps before any mandated was in place. They Indmar and Malibu boats stated catalyst engines for model year 2006. They both had reasons for doing so because of CO poisoning that the wakeboarder and wake surfer was experiencing. Actually a couple of people died because of CO poisoning from wake surfing and a girl hanging out on the swim platform watching a person wakeboarding over a long period of time. Malibu and Indmar looked at it as a health, life / death, cleaner air, cleaner water, quit engine running especially behind the boat issues. Hence the reason they did CAT engines before it was mandated. Also they knew the CAT engine was going to be mandated soon in the USA anyways so why not be the first for rec / ski gas engine boats and market the heck out of the safer issues for buying a wakeboard boat and CAT engine package combo.. |
You are part of the problem so I would expect you to understand.
|
P10 I am sorry but kind of lost here about the " you" and "problem" post. I guess I am some sort of a problem. Really man, I think an ex girlfriend told me that samething at one time. Anyways if this was thrown my way, this is my reply. If not disregard.

BUP - I think it's directed at me.
I'm okay with it as a 2002 Chevy 1500 sits next to me. Frame is rotted enough the middle crossmember is over 75% torn away. It's the frame that's ripped, not the crossmember. Just Not enough metal left. Fuel lines are leaking. Cannot remove them from the nylon lines that come from the tank. Corrosion enlarged that part of the metal lines that far. Looks like the Leaf spring shackles rotted on it a few years ago where the springs broke up thru the bed. We've seen this many times and usually we stop the customer from driving off as they apparently knew about it driving in. You don't NOT notice this driving. It's Here because it needs an inspection sticker. Not because the owner noticed anything wrong .Should I just pass it and let it go down the road ? Should we not have Inspections so this could be left to drive down a public road ? What about the safety of the driver and occupants ? I have to sleep at night. So , my actions will be clear. |
SB I hear you. We have very tough emissions tests here to pass and the state will help you after 3 tries if you failed the testing. Without a current inspection sticker on your front windshield you will get a ticket / fine. Thank whomever.
Just what I want to do especially after working my azz off all day in 110 degree heat is to be stuck behind some jack for 2 hours that is gassing me out in rush hour traffic because his piece of crap can't pass emissions or is from a state that has no emissions testing while I pay to have all my autos pass current testing. And believe me very easy in DFW to get stuck in traffic for 2 hours at a complete stand still. This place is driving CF 14 hours out of the day, every freaking day. |

Removed from a 2001 Dodge Dakota today, caught during a state inspection, customer said the brakes felt fine.
This is why I say at least in NH annual inspections are a very necessary thing. |
