1998 Mercury 250 EFI

OK one for the outboard gurus. I have 2 of these at about 300 hrs and couldn't keep one running yesterday, no gas smell, has fire, so pulled the fuel line at the filter output and no gas when cranking or key on. Did this to the other engine and it pumped gas 10-12" with each revolution. So fuel pump I suppose. Anyone fixed one of these? Easy? I see the rebuild kits are cheap. Anything else it could be? Thanks.

Hope you don't mind a question? I am trying to identify the year on a pair of the same motors and I don't know which number to look for or where to find it. Seems like everything has a number on it. Maybe you can help? QG65506, A13L00654 and more. Thanks!

"0G's" are usually 1998. Could be 1997, but they are the same. Check at rear of motors on the right side of transon bracket should be a sticker. Mine have been flawless until this fuel pump. Looks like they are pretty easy to rebuild but I wanted to see if anyone else had done theirs.

Thanks, yea it looks like they are original to this boat. It's a 1998 Donzi ZF34 that is up for sealed bids by our club. Boat was abandoned here and club took title to it. Supposedly one motor is good, one bad but nobody knows for sure. very clean boat, needs a trailer and a super detailing and I'm assuming that it needs 2 powerheads since both hour meters show 494-502 hours anyway. Thanks again!

Not necessarily. Get them running and wait for a failure. These were called the "law enforcement special" because they were so reliable. I was told by the repair shop many have seen 800 hrs on original powerhead.

More like 1200 hours before considering a rebuild or replacement. Not uncommon to find them on fishing boats still running great with 1000 hours on them, reeds might need replacement around 500 hours but that is usually it.

Did you check the very basic things first? Does the primer bulb pump up hard and stay hard? All it takes is a pin hole in that thing to make you think your fuel pump is bad.

Good idea will do.

Good to know, Thanks! Sealed bids will be opened on Sept 25th. Until then nobody can touch it, like putting a battery to it etc, it's as is where is sort of thing. I should be able to get it for under 10K which I think is a pretty good deal. If I get it then I'll be looking for a trailer first so I can move it around and check it out in greater detail. If one engine is good I think I would get 2 rebuilt power heads and keep the good one for a spare. I've seen power heads for like $4300 plus $600 for a core for the one I keep. Or look around for a pair of 300's?
