Hyd. Roller Lifter Adjustment
What is the proper procedure to adjust a Hydraulic Roller Lifter with the engine running? Hand tighten to take out gap and then tighten 1/2 - 3/4 turn and lock out? How do you know its set correctly?? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Is everyone aware of the lifter shortage due to Federal Moguls bankruptcy? |
The proper way is to do it not running.
Lifter on heel of cam roll pushrod between thumb and index finger while tightening rocker arm nut by hand until you feel it starting to clamp down. wrench nut a half to full turn and lock it. DAVE |
I prefer doing it not running. Spin push rod between a finger and thumb till it stops , then go 1/2-3/4 of a turn. You just have to watch the position of the engine. Your discription pretty much covers it running.

I like to leave them on the loose side.
With it running listen for it to stop ticking and tighten it 1/4 more turn but no matter how much you turn it do it slowly to alow the lifter to bleed down. Or you could bend a valve depending or your V/P clearence. |
I use a dial indicator with an adaptor (easily made)lifter on inner base circle of cam adjust .045" preload into lifter.This allows a flushing effect of the lifter at high rpm and keeps the oil from boiling in the lifter.I have 3 seasons on my hydraulic roller,turning it 5900-6100 rpm.

If you want to speed up the process,you can do 2 or 3 valves noteing the degree of turn on the adjusting nut to get preload and do the same on the rest.

one cyl at a time,bring the cyl to TDC,loosen the rocker arms,retighten to 0 lash,for hyd roller you need to makes sure you have bench bled them first, only reccomend 1/2 to 3/4,usually 3/4.....rotate motor to next cyl and repeat,really dont reccomend messing with them unless you have the capability to bench bleed the hyd rollers,they dont like to compress correctly.
