Gear Lube change - What Pump?
Hey Y'all,
I'm fixing to do a gear lube change tomorrow on my Bravo1 and would like to know what's the best pump out there for refilling and where to get one relatively cheap. Thanks! And just to freshen up my memory, is this how it goes?
How's that? Is that it? Thanks Again!!!! |
Also, appx how much gear lube should I buy(drive capacity plus some spillage).
Thanks! |
I'd start with at least two quarts per drive and there's a pump that'll screw right onto the oil bottle (about 7 to 8 bucks) and the hose has mating threads to screw into the drive. Just attach and pump away. Check West Marine, Boaters World, Walmart (best price), PepBoys, etc., they all carry it.

man- o - man....pump, shump...thoses things are a joke that they sell....you'll pump'n your ass off!LOL .....take the top cap off and inspect gears/thrush bearing/cap and things...you should be doing this anyway....then just dump it in:D ....i do this when i have the drives in the dolly on the floor....then you can check out those u-joints as well:D
|
same guy that's sell'n the pump:rolleyes:
you do have to wait till the air bleeds out...the merc way is idiot proof....but i can be doing other chit and not bent over pupming:eek: ....pumps, bent over, pumping....what kinda board is this anyway:D |
LOL Audacity!:D
Thanks for the info...The only reason I wouldn't do it from the top is for air pocket reason. I've heard that there's a substantial amount of volume that won't fill that way. But you guys are saying that it's not a problem...Hmmm, why create a hastle then right? |
make sure to inspect everything...check those u-joints!
a good indication i there was excessive air trapped is if you keep having to add oil to the reservoir....i add nothing..... good luck bro.... |
Thanks again!
So, the general concensus is that it's okay to fill from top as long as you wait long enough for the lube to settle and the air to escape....Maybe even run it in gear for a little while. Then monitor the bottle for loss. That's it, right? |
Hay Nick if you do pump it in ;)Drive down drain. Drive up and then back down to get it all out.Drain and clean resevior.Hook up pump and get to work, after it comes out the the top plug then I put the plug back in the top and then take off the pump as it fluid wll come out slower and you will lose less. Then I take the top plug out again and add to the resevoir and wait till it comes out fill plug and replace plug and top off resevoir :cool:If you haven't switch to Amzoil or better I would think about it now:cool:

I use a insect sprayer. The fitting for the drain plug hole came from one of those pain in the a## $8 hand pumps.
It is a little slow but the insect sprayer requires alot less pumping. BTW I use an opaque sprayer and mark a line for the volume of gear lube required for the drive. Fill to line, pump it up, lock the sprayer valve ON and walk away for another project ;) Stop when full before pumping air into gearcase. DO NOT FILL FROM TOP on an ALPHA!!!!!! |
