I agree with Mild! Get back up on that horse and ride it! As I recall you didn't get much run/test time on the engine did you???? get a good bore scope and look inside all the holes, I'm hoping you dodged the bullet and will be OK. Mild is right concerning your eye for detail concerning the assembly process, so I believe the engine will serve you well.

Ran it again on the hose to winterize. Added a mechanical gauge, and verified that it is only giving me 30 - 35 PSI. Fok!!
Pulled the filter and drained off some oil to send in for a sample. Oil looks crystal clear on the dipstick. Looks pretty normal in the filter - doesn't seem fuel diluted or thin to me. Oil analysis and filter post-mortem will most likely tell the tale. :food-smiley-007: When running on the hose, thought I heard a some clatter from the starboard side. Didn't sound like a knock to me -more like a little lifter clatter. Held a stethascope to the oil pan and couldn't hear anything unusual. Didn't pull any plug wires to see if sound changed because rain was moving in. If I have a bearing issue I think the filter will tell me. I guess it's possible that something is going on with the filter bypass. I do have the Gen VI bypass plugged off, so all oil has to pass through the filter. And no, it is not a Fram filter - Purolator gold. Planning to switch to NAPA Gold this winter. |

However, first rule of thumb with ANY engine, stock or modified, is never let it run out of fuel supply. This could have happened if you had a stock 365 mag with the wrong fuel pump, or fuel lines. You were so anal about the build, parts selection, valvetrain geometry, rocker alignment, and so forth. I mean you were looking into .060 backset rockers to correct the geometry issue, had a 20 page thread on it, which most average guys on here wouldnt have even looked twice at. But then to totally disregard the fuel supply? Ran it all summer and not even verify fuel psi? Not trying to beat ya up bud, but if the engine is hurt, you can only kick yourself in the ball bag. You did a nice job on the engine, and have a good piece there. Don't right off the engine as being problematic, it was a simple fix from day 1, and still is, well hopefully. We all fuk up once and a while, but ya gotta hang in there. If not for yourself, then do it for all the guys who helped ya with advice on building that thing for 3 years. I think we'd all like to see a post from you that says "Fixed the fuel supply issue!!! Cut filter open, and no sign of bearing debris. Going to try to find a way to wedge a larger oil filter in there, as the stringer location had limited me to one of the short filters. What WIX / NAPA Gold number are most of you all running? Looking for something that is not more than about 5 inches long, as I don't think a bigger filter will wedge in there.

Also, need to get moving on my fuel supply issue. For those of you who upgraded to a larger diameter fuel tank pickup, what did you use to fabricate it?

When you cut the filter open did all of the paper look like it was pushed together? If it collapses the oil filter it will normally lower the oil pressure about 20psi from the pressure relief valve.

Don't forget that I have the bypass plugged on this engine - all the more reason for me to try to get a larger filter on there. Might have to go back to a remote location, as I am just using a thermostatic sandwich adapter on the block right now.

Thought this was relevant - wondering if I might have been getting a lot of condensation from running it on the hose and in the cold river water. Not a lot of surface area on that filter, combined with the plugged bypass:
