540CI builds, MAX RPM?

I am doing my homework getting things figured out, what is a good goal rpm for 540? the last ones topped out at 5200 with tiny cams, I wanna get more hp and redoing cams, I was told 5800-6000 is a good goal number for the 700 hp mark goal...
I will be using good parts and perfect balancing, dart blocks and all that... not sure how propping would be for old TRS Mistress and a 10,000lb boat..getting ideas together I was gonna shoot for 5500 but a buddy says the higher rpm will be easier on my drives... I want real world advice here nit guessing, I wanna do this one time!

biggest thing is the higher rpm any kind of issue longevity of cylinder wall wear? things like that?

ROB FREEMAN 11-09-2014 04:07 PM

im no expert but higher the rpm the more the wear n tear on everything .. i would guess

Black Baja 11-09-2014 04:38 PM

Your gonna need 62-6300 rpm to get to the 700hp mark.

what yours make and what rpm? details?

Full Force 11-09-2014 05:04 PM

lets say 675-700 hp goals....

These are some of Bob Madara's words to me when I was considering building a 540ci . Coming from Bob you can take these words as gospel . " Your 700 hp target , from a 540ci displacement platform is absolutely doable . The majority of our 540 engine platforms are all dynoing between 685 and 725 hp , under 6000 rpm . The key components in making your target are going to be the induction system , cylinder heads and valve train . " I hope this helps to answer your question with information straight from the horses mouth .

ICDEDPPL 11-09-2014 05:52 PM

Since I got the boat I`ve been trying to get to 6000 rpm.
Success this year.

wow a lot of deflection in that cog belt, very cool

Oh what a sweet sound , great job ICDED !

I didnt buy these parts, I bought engines and got fukked so I am reusing whats good and fixing anything wrong....
buying all new Dart short deck blocks, Scat or eagle rotating assembly, all balanced and made perfect ..
I am working on getting head numbers all I know now are Pro Comp PC-3010-454-0603 part nbumber, I cant find much but seem to be 310CC runner and I know the chambers are 118CC supposed to be 9.5:1

Intakes are a single plane chinese dart intakes for 4150 carbs as of now I have 800HP500 carbs (will change later after I get engines going)

cams now are attached sheet. same as dyno sheet I can get cams that are more agressive that made good numbers or get some ground... ones I can get 242/[email protected] 112LSA .630 lift... made 690hp@6000 in a 540..

joe and I been talking a lot recently and seeing what good options for my combo will be along with a few other guys.... I wanna do this one time, if I make 650 then so be it, but wanna make sure it's all right and matched....

Take the heads to billy Tim. Ask him to have his dad take them to be flowed.
If it was my stuff, I'd have billy set up the valve springs and check everything out.

Are those heads "as cast"?

That was an AWESOME vid ICDEDPPLL! thanks for sharing...........nice to see the view from under the hatch for once

the heads as far as ports are, the rest was done last summer to make them right, they had many issues.... all new valves, grinds, springs were ok, retainers, keepers and guides all new....

Is that a bazooka bass tube mounted to the front of the starboard engine? Or a rocket launcher? :fear:

Good luck on your engine build wish I had some advice, learning myself.

Sweet video ICDEDPPL!

My 509 dynod at 684hp at 6200...it did have very good heads though. I think he could make 700 at 6000 but I do not see a problem spinning it higher.

Cole2534 11-09-2014 08:53 PM

Well, you need to determine what average piston velocity you're willing to live with and build to that standard. Nascar and F1 engines, IIRC, both have similar piston speeds but note the RPM difference.

Sweet video ICDEDPPL!

I know a decent amount, but advice and questions should always be asked! Never hurts to learn more!!

C1000 11-09-2014 09:02 PM

a lot of good information here

airjunky 11-09-2014 09:31 PM

Last year I detuned a 540 with a 8-71 that was set to peak at 7900 rpm ,street car to marine duty ,had dart heads ,Merlin block ,quite a bit of run time and was wearing well .most people on the water will try to keep it well under 6k rpm though

I just don't see it happening at 6000 with those heads. Gonna need some Rpm to improve the VE with a set of heads like that.

Full Force 11-10-2014 05:59 AM

Maybe I need to fully work the heads I got, of I can I'm gonna... I was informed the pro comp heads worked can flow some good air.... All depends the $$ I got to spend

Cole2534 11-10-2014 08:52 AM

On a 4.25" stroke-
66ft/s is ~5600rpm
82.5ft/s (roughly what a nascar mill spins) is ~7000rpm

Here's a kick ass chart showing the numbers for two high performance engines. Yours will spin slower, but proportionally so.

Full Force 11-10-2014 04:26 PM

Hard to read Rob, any clearer pic?

Looks like you hit 700hp well before 6000? so anything in the 5500-6000 range is doable if parts are right... unless the fuzz is that fuzzy lol

ROB FREEMAN 11-10-2014 04:26 PM

705 at 5k it looks like a little fuzzy i agree ill ck if the other engine dyno is any better but theese 572 hit 700 early

Full Force 11-10-2014 05:07 PM

thought 540's oops.... lol
