Best oil filter with sandwich adapter and plugged bypass?
While all of the fun is going on on the oil pump thread, I thought I would try to start up some trouble with my own thread. ;)
I am running a Gen VI block with the oil bypass plugged. I'm also running a thermostatic sandwich adapter with #10 lines going to/from my oil cooler, with the filter mounted to the adapter. I set it up this way in an effort to eliminate the extra hoses and fittings needed for a remote filter adapter, but the down side is that it makes it tough to fit a large filter in there. I had a smaller filter on there for space purposes that became flow restricted and resulted in a drop of about 20 PSI oil pressure. I am going to try a larger WIX or NAPA filter on there, but someone mentioned in my other post that I should consider an oil filter with a bypass built into it in case the filter became clogged. Now I realize that if my filter gets clogged with metal, that will be the least of my problems, but I have also read that the cellulose filter media used by many filter makers can swell and become clogged water going through it. I'm not sure how much moisture would cause this, but it is not unexpected to see some condensation, so I guess it's a possibility. My two questions boil down to this: 1. Should I find a filter with a built in bypass, and if so, can someone recommend one? 2. Should I look for something with synthetic media? Thanks in advance! |
Well crap, I guess I need to start an oil pump thread so I can make some new friends. :p

I generally run a baldwin b1335 (iirc) which has a bypass build in. I specifically got a filter with a bypass because I have a plug in the block bypass. I also liked this filter because it had a higher burst pressure than most.

Baldwin are very good filters as well. I am dealer for them plus sell their fuel water sep filters. Hastings filters is also owned by the same as Baldwin.

If you don't want to spend the $$$ on say; System One Billet filter with a 35 micron element and non bypass. Use a Wix racing filter by all means. I always use a Napa Gold, so to catch all the small particles at initial start-up in the boat to catch everything after coming off the dyno, with all the coolers and hoses in place. Water coming into the picture affecting the filter, is a problem to start with, unless I misunderstood you.

This is a good subject for thought .I think a lot of filters now seem to be more about price point and effectiveness in the light truck market than us marine folks with other oil filter needs like slow oil temp rise and plugged bypass ect .have been wanting to dig some out of the drum and cut open to compare for a while .the best set up I seen so far was factory marine power remote dual oil filter ,502 gen 6 , still had 30lb bypass ,still flowed all through the filters on cold start verified with dist housing and a stout air drill
