HP 500 Head and Cam upgrade
Does anyone have info/thoughts/intuition on how much horsepower a 96 HP500 would make with the Edelbrock aluminum marine heads with an upgraded cam(thinking the 741)? I’m sure this has been debated before but I’m debating the Edelbrocks and getting my 088 heads worked on. I’m going to replace the cam anyway and was thinking of upgrading the heads while on this project. I have no magic number to hit horsepower wise. Simply looking for the best bang for my buck.

contact Bob M. @ marine kinetics...

It would make less than it would if you got afr 305's and a cam from bob. Did one last winter made 606 @ 6000, with a small carb and mild cam. It idles at 700

Do the 305's come with the Marine coating ?

You can order any of the AFR's hard anodized.

I believe it is about $175 extra for the inconel exhaust valve upgrade, and I think about $200 for hard anodizing. Those are prices I got through Bob. From what I have read about the Edelbrocks, not sure if that would be worth the money and trouble of going aluminum. If raised exhaust parts are an issue I think Brodix makes a pretty good head with exhaust ports in the standard location.
Should be pretty easy to get 625 - 650 HP with the AFR heads and a good hyd roller from Bob. |
The edlebrock is a quality piece but offers very little as far as performance over the HP500 heads.

what about just a cam swap all else being the same?

Can make 550-570 with a cam change, so I've heard. I haven't dyno'd one myself to verify.
